CHILDHOOD. | Nicola was born to Wishe Tarbel and Alka Skadegamutc on the Chapleau Cree Fox Lake Indian Reserve in Ontario. He was named Akshat Skadegamutc, using his mother’s surname to further the matrilineal lines of the culture. His parents’ relationship dissolved before Nicola was three months old and while his father remained on the Reservation to serve as Shaman, his mother moved off the reservation to make her way in the wizarding world where she was more comfortable. She met Nicola’s stepfather Rurik when Nicola was an infant when she took a position as an apprentice in his broom making business.
To help Nicola fit in with the rest of the area they moved to, she changed his name, adding Nicola as a first name so as not to totally erase his identity and ties to his ancestry. His mother and step father eventually relocated to Toronto to be closer to his family when Nicola was seven. That changed Nicola’s upbringing drastically. In order to account for the distance between them, Nicola would spend one year with his mother and the next with his father. He lived two very separate lives with two very separate identities. While on the Reservation he was Akshat and was taught his Native heritage and ways including the Eastern dialect of the Cree language, practically to the exclusion of the wizarding blood that was prevalent on both sides of the family. He grew to have a great appreciation for the First Nation’s traditions and ways of life. While living with his mother in Toronto, he was immersed in the wizarding world and culture, and was taught to speak Russian as well as French. Although his stepfather was against it, his mother allowed him to enroll in Okichitaw classes where he learned and excelled at the Indigenous combat arts. He challenged himself and maintained and strengthened his proficiency at the martial arts form even while spending time on the Reservation away from formalized classes. He also found a love for other forms of martial arts, particularly Taekwando.
Despite the clash of cultures between the two worlds he lived in, Nicola managed to easily switch from one life to the other without much need for reorientation after a year away. This gave him the ability to pick up the vibe of a room and easily fit into his surroundings whether they were familiar to him or not. The continual year separation from classmates and siblings kept Nicola from forming many close friendships with humans and instead learned to keep everyone at arm’s length. He learned from an early age to value knowledge and how to manipulate situations to get what he wanted. He ended up with a reputation in both areas for one who had little empathy and would do just about anything to get things to go his way.

SCHOOL YEARS. | In July of his tenth year, he received his acceptance letter to Ilvermorny. This sparked a feud between his parents with his mother and stepfather wanting him to attend Ilvermorny and his father wanting to continue the alternating year custody agreement. In the end, Nicola’s desire to attend the wizarding school led to his father relenting on the concession that the alternating year custody agreement was still honored for school breaks.
Like any first-year Nicola was nervous about starting at a new place, however unlike his classmates, his childhood gave him a distinct advantage. He stepped out of his old skin and into the new skin of an Ilvermorny student without any difficulty, assimilating into the culture as if it had been one, he was born into. As he was not unnerved with the proceedings, he stood front and center at the sorting ceremony with those students who had the benefit of having older siblings attend the school. He was the first in his class sorted into Wampas, and thus began his new regime.
He thrived in the independence of the boarding school and not having to live up to the expectations of either parent. He was able to take the classes he liked and pursue the extracurricular activities that called to him. He threw himself into his studies Favoring the Defense Against the Dark Arts, Charms, and Potions over other less critical endeavors. He joined the dueling club, potions club, and chess club. All focused-on ambition, tact, and skill. Three traits that attempted to emulate in all aspects of his school life.
Nicola joined the quidditch team as seeker in his third year. Having grown up the stepson of a broom maker, he learned to fly at an early age and, even on the Reservation with his father, found time to practice. The beginning of every year his stepfather would gift each of his teammates the newest and best broom available thereby giving his team a unique advantage with speed and agility. By his fifth year he was captain of the team. His team was undefeated for the three years he led it, as he demanded his teammates attend daily practice as well as to make time for studies. The team at the end of the season was never the same as the one at the beginning. He would keep several additional house members training with the team so if and when one of the official team members challenged his time demands, he would replace them with one that was already training with the team and therefore made for a relatively seamless transition from one player to the next. The only position for which he did not keep a back-up player training with the team was seeker, his own. He was never seen idle on the grounds and in addition to the school related activities, he could be found twice a day somewhere on the grounds practicing Okichitaw and Taekwando.
Despite the amount of extracurricular activities, he threw himself into, he maintained perfect grades in those classes he deemed as important and necessary for his future, and near perfect grades in the rest. When he was able, he added classes such as arithmancy and Magical Law to his already full schedule. His popularity from the quidditch team ended in his election to the role of Prefect in his fifth, sixth, and seventh years. In his seventh year he was elected to and served as President of the student body.
In his sixth year he sat the JARVEY (Juxtaposed Assessments for Reviewing versatile Experienced Youth) exams with the rest of his year. He placed highest in the school. As was predicted by the Headmaster at the beginning of his third year, Nicola graduated top of his class, opening many doors to future employment.

ADULDHOOD. | Throughout his seventh year at Ilvermorny, Nicola debated what he wanted to do with his life after graduation. His father wanted him to return to the Reservation and to basically abandon the magical world as he had. His mother and stepfather wanted him to return home and help with the family business and prepare to take it over when his stepfather retired.
Neither of these options suited Nicola, his desires and ambitions led him on a completely different path. Directly out of school Nicola accepted an apprentice position as a Hit Wizard with the Ministry of Magic and uprooted his life yet again to make the move to England. He settled in Surry in a small magic only portion Walton-on-Tames. While the skills in flying and dueling led him to excel at the career, the fact hit wizards were relegated to only fighting bothered him. With his background in Magical Law and his propensity to excel at strategy and investigative endeavors, he switched his apprenticeship to that of an Auror as soon as a position became available. With his ability to seamlessly adapt to new situations, he had wanted to become an undercover agent with the Aurors helping to investigate crime and the underground wizarding societies. However, his Native American ancestry makes him stand out in the crowd and made it difficult for him to go places unnoticed. He has spent the last six years honing his investigative as well as fighting skills and still keeps up to date with the most current changes with laws within wizarding society.
Outside of work, which takes up the majority of his working and nonworking hours as he tends to throw himself totally into a case, Nicola’s leisure time is taken up with additional study. He continues to further his knowledge of the law searching for loopholes which others may exploit. In addition, he has joined a local dueling club to further hone his magical fighting skills.
Despite the disadvantages of not having access to Okichitaw or Taekwando classes during his time at Ilvermorny, once he graduated and settled in Surrey, he did find a local studio and dove into formalizing his education. He earned his first-degree black belt at 19, his second at 21, and his third degree at 24. He is currently working on achieving his fourth-degree black belt. Continuing with Okichitaw has been a bit more challenging as there is no-one local to further teach him. He maintains correspondence with his instructors from Canada and continues his training through online courses and evaluations.

RP SAMPLE (200 words min.)
Nicola strides into the Auror’s office and halfheartedly tosses his tomahawk on his desk. He’d been working out, taking a bit of time to relax and think about their current case. A pretty little mediwitch had been attacked three times and they were no closer to figuring out who or why now than they were two weeks ago when the first attack happened. He sighed. He was early, he usually was as he preferred to use the training facilities while there were few others around.
He walked over to the files and pulled all the folders relating to this case and the several other disappearances and murders associated with St. Mungos and the Ministry itself. Any that had occurred in the last two months. There must be a connection somewhere. And he was determined to find it. Every case he solved put him closer to next in line when promotions came around and he had no intention of staying an Auror forever. He was gunning for Granger’s position. And he’d get it eventually. There was always a way. He pulled a blank pad of paper and quill out of the desk drawer and flipped open the first file. He always started with the mediwitch, he wasn’t sure why, superstition possibly but more likely it was the fact that she had thwarted the attacks three times regardless of the number of attackers which ranged from two to about fourteen. The attacks with two and five attackers there as no outside help. The fourteen attackers drew the attention of the Aurors as the casting in Muggle London raised alarm after alarm. Regardless, her protector, this Ellis character, had been successfully shielding them the onslaught of spells.
He shook his head looking over his notes. They’d lost one of their own that night. Zane. He’d been a good auror, had the potential to drive it home if he would have zigged instead of zagged. It was tough to lose one of your own. Nicola would not call any of these people friends, actually he prided himself in not calling anyone a friend. It was easier to make your way up in the world when you weren’t bothered by whose toes you stepped on while you were passing them on the ladder. But it drove home, to him at least, that slacking off on training was not an option. He had no desire to lose his life to one of those jokers they had been fighting that night. He needed to set up some sparing and dueling practice. It would be good; it had been a while since he fought someone who wasn’t trained in Taekwando. He wanted a different style to try to defend against.
He went back to the file. The mediwitch… Laureano, yes, was a half-blood pacifist, that was underlined, highlighted, and circled for reference although the relevance was not clear. She worked at St. Mungos and had been attacked on the way home. Ellis, did not know her prior to the attack. However, the fact she’d been moved into his home suggested that wasn’t the entire truth. He wondered how they were connected not only to each other but to the growing stack of other files that sat on his desk. Some worked for the hospital, some for the Ministry. Some were muggle born, some were half blood, and a couple were pureblood. Nothing obvious jumped out at him. He’d gone over and over their hobbies and socializing habits. Nothing to connect them.
Nicola growled and stood, knocking the chair over in the process. He shook his head; he was letting this case get to him. He wanted it solved; he wanted the senseless attacks to stop. Well, if he was honest, he wanted acknowledgment and accolades from solving the attacks. He couldn’t really be bothered by the deaths of the others; it only served to muddle the thoughts and made it harder to do what needed to be done. He absently picked up his tomahawk and bounced it on his shoulder as he sifted through the files, scanning for something he had missed the last dozen or so times he’d gone through them.
The door to the office opened and he turned, watching Carman as she entered the room. He smirked and nodded at her. “Hey boss, you’re late.” She wasn’t technically his boss, but he’d adopted the title as it ruffled her feathers the first time he’d used it when he’d just started as an intern, what six years before? He watched her for a second then nodded to himself. “Want to get in some training later? Sparring, dueling?” He asked wondering if she’d be interested. She hadn’t in the past, but that could have been timing. Regardless, he wouldn’t know unless he asked again.
