michael rene blackbyrn
AGE 24 BIRTHDAY 12 Jan 1996 OCCUPATION/STUDENT Defense Barrister with the Blackbyrn Set of Chambers SCHOOL/HOUSE/YEAR Hogwarts | Slytherin BLOOD STATUS Pureblood LOCATION London, England | PERSONALITY: Michael is self-absorbed and quite full of himself. Confidence is one way to look at it, but in reality it's more arrogance and pride. On the outside, he touts the "pureblood" ideology his parents drilled into him. He can be unnecessarily cruel sometimes and doesn't mind getting his hands dirty if he needs to. He likes to showboat, whether it's for attention or just to infuriate his brother. ASPIRATION: He wants to excel as a barrister, but also gain the approval (or at least attention) of everyone around him. | LIKES: - getting on his brother's nerves - control - winning - flirting - drinking DISLIKES: - mudbloods - predators - his brother - being wrong - not getting his way |

CHILDHOOD. | Michael was born the second son of William and Serena Blackbyrn. From the first day, he was the "spare." Despite being the son without the family curse, he was still destined to just be the second born to inherit nothing. As a young kid, Michael was mostly ignored. His mother did take more of a liking to him as he got closer to eight simply because he was the only one out of the two boys who didn't have the meta curse, but otherwise, he was mainly raised by the nannies. He learned early on how to get his way, whether that was by giving the servants "consequences" for telling him no, or reporting them for things they didn't do. Eventually, they learned to just give him his way until they got fired or quit. Michael went through many nannies and tutors until he started school. Most of his days were spent either being a terror for the nannies or annoying his brother. Michael would find whatever way possible to infuriate William. Nothing was out of bounds. Breaking toys, stealing from him, setting him up and blaming William for things. His whole goal was to make William as perpetually miserable as he felt because he was just the spare. |
SCHOOL YEARS. | Hogwarts was expected when a Blackbyrn came of age, so it was no surprise when he got his letter. His family didn't celebrate since he'd been groomed to be the "proper" Blackbyrn to the public. Firstborn or not, he was still expected to uphold the dignity and honor of the family name. The surprise came when Michael was sorted into Slytherin instead of Ravenclaw like most of the men in his family. It wasn't that Michael wasn't smart, far from it. He's quite clever and cunning and his ability to do whatever it took to get his way landed him squarely into Slytherin house. He made sure to excel in his classes, using whatever means he could to do so. On top of that, Michael claimed center stage with the rest of his class. Whether that was getting the hottest pureblood girl to go to a ball or date him or making the Quidditch team, he used any means necessary to make sure all eyes were on him instead of his brother. Becoming a barrister was predetermined for him. Even as a second-born, Michael was groomed for the courtroom and cater to the pureblood elite. He exceled in debates and manipulation within courtroom scenarios and, over his years at school, started to gain the favor of his mother. The fact that he had their mother in his pocket was something he rubbed in Copyn's face as often as possible. There were many times when the brothers either got in a fist or a wand fight, mostly because of something Michael did to instigate Copyn. |
ADULTHOOD. | Straight out of Hogwarts, Michael got his internship with the barristers on the Wizengamot and exceled in the courtroom. The way he could manipulate a witness' words to his client's benefit was like a magic of its own. He didn't care if his client did or didn't do what they were accused of. His job was to either lessen a sentence or, preferably, win the case in his client's favor and have them walk free. Michael would do anything to stir doubt among the prosecution and jury, pick out the tiniest discrepancies or flat-out try to make it look like the prosecution was lying. In his success, Michael won a loyal client base among the pureblood society. Unlike his brother, Michael stayed strictly within the wizarding community but even that didn't win him what he actually wanted. He wants what his brother has and doesn't want. The family inheritance would still go to a disgraceful muggle-loving meta like William who didn't deserve what was so freely given to him. At 22, Michael was offered a permanent position within the Wizengamot after his internship was over. By day, he defends whatever pureblood hires him at his chamber's excessively high fees. At night, he parties and gets into fights. Other nights, he pokes his brother's buttons just because he's bored. |

This school year had already started off with a bang. His parents were preparing for a huge battle against the people who nearly killed his mom. His first few days in his third year had been easy, though he couldn't say he wasn't tempted to hex a few people just for the hell of it. The fact that he knew most, if not all, of what the teachers were teaching in the first place made the whole experience that much more boring. He didn't have too much patience for idiots, but it was far thinner when it came to those who were willingly ignorant.
That was the main reason why when he saw the two older girls picking on a first year, James wasn't all that forgiving. From what it sounded like when he came around the corner, they were making fun of the girl for being "muggleborn" carrying a backpack as if that was a reason for tormenting someone in the first place. If there was nothing else James couldn't stand, it was purebloods who took to the idiotic supremist ideals some families insisted on sticking to despite the concept being entirely antiquated.
"You know," James quipped dryly as he absently summoned the younger girl's book to him, though his attention was on the older girls. "It might do you two some good to study a bit further on no-maj inventions and their usefulness. Backpacks, for example, have been used for decades to make sure school supplies were organized in a way that made it easier to transport from place to place. If you didn't have your heads back in the 1700s, you might realize pureblood ideas pale in comparison to the ingenuities many no-maj inventors have.
After all, they invented electricity, radio communication, television... Your cell phones you cling so mightily to. You'd be stuck in the stone age wondering which supremist jerk you'd be sold off to, ladies, just to be told your sole job was to have babies and obey your husband no matter what he did to you." He could tell they couldn't believe what they were hearing by the way their features morphed from astonished to infuriated and back again, but James was beyond caring.
He gave the young girl a gentle smile as he handed her book back to her, adjusting the strap of his own backpack on his back.
"Think you're so tough, then? I bet you're nothing but a mud-"
"Ah, I'm going to stop your stupid comment right there," he cut through the girl's attempt at calling him a mudblood, something James had done plenty of research on. "The Tynans in America are one of the more prominent pureblood families, I'll have you know," he said with a smile and a simple step between the two older girls and the younger one. "Ignorance is revealed most when you don't know what you're talking about." James smirked, the last several words almost hissed in a mocking tone.
He hated stupid people most of all, especially when they wore their ignorance so freely while feigning like they knew what they were talking about. The snarl they gave him only made him more adamant in his stature and stance between the bullies and their victim. His mom taught him to stand up for those unable to defend themselves. Being no-maj-born meant this girl was entirely new to this world. She didn't need to be bullied like some common house rat.
"Maybe instead of acting like self-righteous hypocritical idiots with their heads in the dark ages, you should instead welcome no-majes and learn from them. You might be able to gain more than just sticking to the stupid traditions some pureblood families like to cling to like crap on an elderly dog's butthole."
Oh, the looks on their faces was enough to write home about just to give his parents something to laugh about as well. The teacher in the potions classroom started calling for everyone to settle and James raised his eyebrows. "Oh, oops. Might want to get in there before you lose your house more points," he added dryly and they snarled at him before turning on their prissy heels and stormed into the classroom. James chuckled and shook his head with a roll of his eyes as he turned back around to face the girl.
"I'm sorry for them. Not all purebloods are like that, I promise. Just the ones not raised right. My name's James Tynan," he said with a smile, stretching his hand out to shake. "And don't worry, coming from a no-maj family isn't as bad as they make it seem."
