32 January 2, 1989 Healer at Hogwarts Graduated/ Castelobruxo/ NA Muggleborn Hogwarts | PERSONALITY: Aylen is quiet, but do not let that fool you. She is spirited and argumentative when the need arises. She is easy going, unless you corner her, then she will come out fighting and you will never know what hit you. She is loyal almost to a fault, but she will eventually see when a situation is not ideal and move on. She is not the social butterfly, preferring a good book to a night on the town. Which would explain her apparent lack of a social life, or desire to remedy that situation. ASPIRATION: Aylen is setting off on a new adventure. Fueled by her love of children, she has shifted her focus from the hospital setting to the school setting in order to both help maintain the health of the students and staff, but to also help teach the next generation of healers. She would like nothing more than to have her own family one day, but does not hold much hope for that happening, and has resigned herself to accepting that the closest she’ll ever get to that dream are her nieces and nephews and now the students that she will care for. | LIKES: - Herbology and Potions - Books and a quiet corner to read in - Helping others, especially children - The idea of large families - Chocolate and other sweets - Quidditch, well by association she doesn't play. DISLIKES: - Being made to feel inferior and being talked down to. Being quiet she gets that a lot. - Overbearing personalities and people - People believing they know what is best for her. - Cold and Snow - People pretending to be something they aren't. - Being referred to as a Nurse when she is a healer. |

CHILDHOOD. | Aylen is the youngest of four siblings, and while the older two were there, Aylen always seemed to be in the shadow of her brother Andres. Between the two of them he was the first at everything, including showing signs that he was different from the rest of the family. Weird things happened around him, starting when he was seven and she was five. He made the cat fly once when it scratched him. It worried her mother to see the strange behaviors. Her mother started to worry more when strange things started happening around Aylen as well. The first indication of anything unusual happened when she was eight. Her father had put one of her toys up on a shelf where she could not reach it. She was so angry that she made the shelf snap in half and everything on it, including her doll, fell to the floor. Her father had been right there, so he knew she did not physically touch the shelf. He could not explain it other than it was something that Aylen had somehow done. Aylen joined her brother in extra masses during the week and lots of doctor appointments. Their absences from school had gotten to the point where her best friend asked her about it. She reluctantly told him about the shelf and the incident with Andres and the cat. Alejandro just smirked and hugged her and told her not to worry. But it didn’t make Aylen feel any better, at least not that day. However, about a week later, Alejandro and his brother Santiago Oliva Castillo took her and Andres out into a clearing in the woods and, after Aylen and Andres explained about all the strange things that have been happening around them, Alej and Santi started to share their experiences and to explain about the Wizarding world, even though they knew they shouldn’t have. When Aylen was nine and Andres was eleven, as Alej and Santi had predicted, workers from the Ministry came to deliver his letter to Castleobruxo and to explain to their parents about the opportunities that awaited him and, in a couple of years, Aylen. It didn’t take long for her parents to take to the Magical world. It offered so many different things that they could access, even without the ability to do magic. The healers and new way of treating common illnesses were a big interest for them, especially as her mother had lost a sibling to scarlet fever when they were little. |
SCHOOL YEARS. | Aylen wasn’t surprised but was extremely happy when she also got her letter from Castleobruxo. She’d get to go to school with her brother, her best friend Alej, and Santi. And the rest of their family. But these two were the ones they were closest to. She had heard all about the school from her brother, but that did not prepare her for how different and amazing it actually was. She was in complete awe, even after having gotten and read almost all her class books before she got there. The idea of wands actually working was as complex a thought as it was amusing. She remembered growing up playing fairies and witches with her friends and wishing at that time that magic was real. And to find out that it was, well that was absolutely amazing. The fact she couldn’t tell any of those friends was sad, but… rules were rules. And it explained why Alej and Santi always laughed at them when they played with wands that had star ends or heart ends and ribbons. Classes in charms and transfiguration were sometimes crazy and sometimes breathtaking. Her favorites were potions and herbology. Unlike the boys who leaned towards flying. All three played for the school and she was always there when they needed to be patched up. She never attempted any major healing, but minor scrapes and scratches she would mend without issues. She watched, cheering for them all, but secretly cheering for Santi more. She had always thought Santi was special, remembers her mother and Santi’s telling stories of how she would toddle around after him trying to do everything he did. He’d always been kind and doating, but he was the same to other young children as well. She and Andres were close and that meant they spent a good deal of time, all four of them together. Though being the only girl had its downfalls sometimes. Less in the early years and more so as they got older and they started to take an interest in girls, and girls in them. For the most part it didn’t bother her, except when one of her friends asked about Santi. She had a crush on Santi, had since she knew what a crush was. It had never mattered though, Santi looked past her most of the time. As they got older, Andres and Santi drew further away from her. Alej drew closer. Which was good, they were her best friends. As Andres and Santi graduated, the separation between the friends was more permanent. Andres insisted Aylen stop fussing over him, he was playing quidditch and needed to worry about that and not deal with a child’s crush. So, she threw herself completely into her studies, ignoring most of the balls and other major parties that went on. She’d decided that she wanted to be a healer, considering she’d spent so much time patching up the guys. And she dedicated her spare time to extra reading and extra practice to be the best she could be. Near the end of her fifth year when she’d been pulled from school to go with her mother to help her deliver her baby brother. She didn’t remember that time, not one bit of her memories from around November of her fifth year until September of her sixth year were her own. Everything had been filled in by her parents. They had been in a bus accident on their way to stay with family and she had hit her head and when she came to, she had no memory of anything, the accident or why she’d been there, nothing. They were her parents, so they trusted them and the doctor who had treated her, why shouldn’t she? The only thing that ever felt out of place about the events was her brother’s name. Benjamin Santiago. Santiago was her brother’s best friend and had been a part of their family since she was born. If they had only used Santiago on its own, she might never have questioned it. But combined with Benjamin, it had always made her curious. Benjamin was the only name Santi had ever come up with when she and Alej used to force Santi and Andres to play ‘house’ on the threat of tears. Though whenever she questioned her parents, they always just fell back on having just liked the name. She didn’t remember finishing her fifth year, but she started her sixth with her peers. She spent the first couple of months playing catch up with the material she couldn’t remember from the year before, but considering she’d had top marks throughout her time there, and supposedly had made top marks on her exams the year before, neither her family nor her teachers were concerned about her ability to keep up. And she had proved them right. Her sixth and seventh years passed in a whirl of studying and not much else, as she focused her time on working towards becoming a healer. It didn’t surprise anyone, therefore, when she graduated with high marks and immediately was placed in the internship she wanted. |
ADULTHOOD. | Graduating from Castelobruxo she entered a healer internship for emergency medicine which was what she thought she wanted to do, given the amount of time she spent patching up her friends at school. What she hadn’t realized was that emergency medicine was a lot more than just patching up her friends and she quickly realized this was not what she wanted to do. After floundering for a while thorough the different internship programs, she landed on pediatric medicine and found she enjoyed caring for children. She spent her residency focusing on infants but decided against specializing there and decided instead to do general pediatrics. Which is what she has been doing ever since. Mostly in the hospital setting she has tended to children of witches and wizards sporting all forms of illnesses and injuries. The more amusing cases are always the muggle illnesses that pass through the wards. Those wizards who think their children are immune to germs and viruses simply because they are wizards and do foolish things like allow their children to play with their muggle friends who have chicken pox or the like. Simple viruses to cure, but simply keeping away from the infected individuals tend to be the most rewarding. This was what focused her career and kept her going from the time she left Castelobruxo until early in 2019. That was when her baby brother, Benji, fell ill. He was fifteen, so still a pediatric case and he ended up in Aylen’s care. Her brother had been plagued by kidney stones since he was young and they had kept him on a diet to try and prevent the build-up, but as he got older the problem became worse. This time finally landed him in the hospital with enough concern that Aylen reached out to a kidney specialist. Benji was eventually diagnosed with end-stage renal disease caused by X-linked Recessive Nephrolithiasis. Unfortunately, the version that Benji ended up with was the one that showed little to no major symptoms until the kidneys started to fail. And this was where they found themselves. Facing the prospect of renal transplantation. After researching the disease and the transplant options, she looked to her parents to be tested as potential living donors as a parent was the best chance of a match. When neither of her parents were matches, they started the long process of trying to find an outside donor. A couple of weeks with not even a hint of a match passed and her parents pulled her aside one evening and suggested that she be tested. Aylen originally protested, with neither of her parents being a match, the chances of her being a match were slim at best. However, at her parents’ request she had the testing done, what was the worst that would happen, she wouldn’t be a match, which is what she had suspected all along. However, remarkably, she came back as not only a suitable match, but a near perfect match. Aylen had to read the results several times, but there was only one way for this familial match to be so compatible. A parent to child match. Armed with the facts, Aylen confronted her parents. They initially denied the truth, but finally gave her the full story of what happened. She was in fact Benji’s mother. Her parents had pulled her from school just as she started to show and had taken her to give birth in another town where the stigma of being an unwed mother could not follow her home. To ensure that she cooperated, they had consulted several muggle and wizarding doctors alike and the best option that they found was to have her undergo a memory charm that would remove all memory of the events from conception through birth. Aylen was furious and sad at the same time. Her parents had stolen her son, and the memory of him from conception to birth from her… from Benji. The only thing they had kept was most of the name she had given him. Aylen had named him Benjiman Santiago Vega Castillo, in honor of his father, Santiago. The boy she had grown up loving and had loved to this day. The name now made complete sense. Her parents had dropped Castillo from the birth certificate but had kept Benjiman Santiago. Aylen had waited until Benji was healed and headed back to school before she told him the truth. Like Aylen, Benji had chosen to sever ties with his grandparents. He wanted to take his father’s name, but until they could tell him and get the proper blood tests done, there was no legal way to do it other than to make it appear as a random name change, and Benji did not want that. He wanted the connection to his father. That might have seemed unusual, except Santi had always been seen as an uncle, had always spoiled him with quidditch equipment and even spent time with Benji working on quidditch techniques whenever Santi had been home. Knowing Santi was his father had made Benji happy and that made Aylen happy. The news, however, had left Aylen out of sorts. She had no idea how to tell Santi the truth. She didn’t want to just blurt it out over the phone. She’d spent the year writing different letters but had never been able to send them. That was news she could only share in person. That, however, proved harder than she thought it would. Every time She tried to get away, something prevented her from being able to leave, even for a weekend. In the beginning it had been Benji’s health and recovery as well as her own. Later it had been demands from the hospital after the regime change. Add to that the fact Santi had not been home in years, and Aylen was facing a year of knowing without having had the opportunity to tell Santi. The hospital had a regime change a good six months previous and the new head of her department was less than up to the task. He seemed to think keeping a minimal staff load and then just mandating additional hours was the best option for the hospital. It left her staff and colleagues fuming and made it hard to retain good people as they were easily enticed away by better positions. This was exactly where Aylen found herself one day, sitting in her office scanning openings for healers. Most of the times the adds wanted someone to deal with adults, aging seniors, sports teams, etc. And that was not what Aylen wanted, so she stayed where she was. Until the add for a healer position at Hogwarts had popped up. She had not been sure she wanted to go that far from home, but, as her best friend and roommate Alej reminded her, Santi was teaching there. Aylen asked Alej what she would do if she moved out, and her response was a simple shrug and a wink, stating that she’d find herself a new roommate. As if it would be that simple. But Alej had a great system of friends now and Aylen was not as worried about her as she used to be. So, with her best friend’s approval and encouragement, Aylen applied for the job. The idea of working at the same school as Santi was confusing. On the one hand he would be there. And on the other… he would be there. Despite and encouraged by both the idea of working that closely with the students, and Santi’s presence, Aylen happily packed up her life and moved from her home in South America to Scotland to set up her new practice within the halls of Hogwarts. |

Aylen sat at her desk in the hospital and sighed. She loved what she did, yes, but there were other considerations. For one, she was not enjoying the shifting schedules, her life was always in a state of not knowing what the next week would hold, so making plans for hanging out with friends or dating was nearly impossible. Then again, she’d volunteered for the position years ago because she didn’t have a life. That had slowly changed, and she’d adapted, but it was tiring. She was also tired of long shifts becoming longer when someone called out. She looked up as there was a knock on her door. “Come in.”
The tall figure of her boss leaned against the frame and watched her for a moment. “Everyone on the nursing staff is getting an extra twelve hours next week, minimum, we have too many on vacation. There will be some grumbling, but you can handle the nurses in your group.” He nodded before beginning to step away.
“Sir.” she said, stopping his retreat. She was done with him putting everything on her. If it was a bonus, he’d make the announcement and take credit for it. If it was mandating extra hours, then the doctors in charge were made to give the announcement and take the heat. Granted her staff knew the routine, and knew it wasn’t her fault… but she was tired of it for them. If the staff would pay attention to scheduling requests, they wouldn’t schedule too many nurses off at the same time to require this. And this was the last straw for her. She’d written and rewritten her resignation several times over the last few months, but the one she’d written only days before was still sitting in her drawer.
“What is it Aylen, I have things I need to do.” He was annoyed at being interrupted; he always was.
Aylen pulled the letter of resignation from the drawer and stood. She walked over to him, slapped the paper to his chest and smirked. “I quit.” She said as she slipped past him and disappeared down the hallway.
