Morag, Sloane
AGE: 13 BIRTHDAY : March 3, 2006 OCCUPATION/STUDENT: Student SCHOOL/HOUSE/YEAR: Hogwarts/Ravenclaw/3rd Year BLOOD STATUS: Halfblood LOCATION : Linlithgow, UK | PERSONALITY: Morag may be reserved when it comes to expressing her opinions, but she has one. She is intelligent but would rather be hanging with her friends having fun than studying. She is outgoing and likes being the center of attention. While she is deaf, she does not let it define her or stop her from achieving what she wants in life. ASPIRATION: Morag isn’t quite sure what she wants to do when she grows up, maybe be a healer like her father, or train animals like Ragnall, or teach like her mom. But right now, at thirteen, the most important thing that she could accomplish would be to make the house quidditch team, and eventually be a Prefect and Head Girl. | LIKES: -Flying - Animals - Being the center of attention. - Music and dancing, as long as it has a good strong base she can feel. - Adventure, being in the middle of something. DISLIKES: - Being seen as her disability and having people try to do things for her without asking if she wants help. - People assuming she can't do something because she is deaf. - When she's having a conversation with a person, and they turn so she can no longer read their lips. - The idea of being alone. - Sitting still and just reading. |

CHILDHOOD. | Morag is the eldest child of Eoghan and Alys Sloane. Her father is a healer with a private practice for local wizarding families. Her mother is deaf and teaches at The Donaldson School. Morag was born hearing but began to lose it at three from the same genetic condition that afflicts her mother. She started to show signs of magical abilities around the same time her hearing loss was most pronounced, just prior to losing her hearing all together. They would notice that the TV or radio volume would increase without anyone near the controls. From there it was other little things, spiders crawling deliberately towards her, bounced balls hovering longer than they should before gravity brought them back to the ground, etc. While disheartened by the diagnosis, it did not stop her parents from treating her like any hearing child. She had the benefit of already knowing sign language as she needed to know it to communicate with her mother. While challenging, it also gave her the opportunity to attend her mother’s school, which her brother and sister were not able to do. Her time at her mother’s school allowed her to learn to read lips fluently. Knowing she was losing her hearing her parents sought a way for her to communicate in both the muggle and wizarding world when not accompanied by one of her parents, and in a group situation. They settled on a trained capuchin monkey. They trained them as service animals in the Muggle world to help with fetching and opening/closing things. They are highly intelligent and strong; despite their small size they can easily lift a human limb. Given the dexterity in their hands, with a bit of magical assistance, they took the Muggle trained companion and had him trained to sign, so she can keep up better with conversations in group situations. She has had Ragnall since she was eight and he is her best friend and constant companion. |
SCHOOL YEARS. | Morag got her letter at eleven as expected. She was going to Hogwarts like her father. Well, she wanted to, but her mother was hesitant to send her to a hearing school. They tended to not understand or make the necessary accommodations to allow non-hearing students to excel. She sat in the kitchen as her parents argued over the opportunity. Eventually, after several more conversations and begging on Morag’s part, her mother conceded, and she was allowed to go. She was a bit hesitant to board the train, realizing that she would essentially be alone with Ragnall to figure out if she could manage to get there on her own. She had been a lot more confident about the idea when they had visited the school over the summer to see about accommodations as needed. Though she didn’t need to worry, with Ragnall on her shoulder, pretty much every first year had wandered into the compartment, or arrogantly poked their head in, to see him. And she ended up meeting people and making a few friends. The experience on the train gave her the confidence she needed to get through the rest of the night. The professor made a point to make eye contact with her and fully face her direction so she could clearly read their lips. Smiling, she walked confidently forward and sat on the stool. As the Sorting Hat was placed on her head, she thought of her father who had been a Gryffindor. She wondered, hoped, she’d end up there, make her dad proud. Just as she was thinking about how her dad had been so happy about having another Gryffindor in the family, the Sorting Hat put her in Ravenclaw. Ravenclaw? She was stunned for a moment before finally finding her feet and heading to the Ravenclaw table. After the initial wave of disappointment wore off, helped significantly by an owl from home with both her parents expressing how proud they are of her, she settled into a routine, that included Ragnall jumping on her head in the mornings to wake her up. Her first and second years she spent intent on studying and grades. Her favorite class her first couple years was flying. She took to that like it was the best thing in the world. Her first two years being fairly uneventful, she was hoping her third would lead her to something more. Something fun. She wanted to join the Ravenclaw Quidditch team and take Care of Magical Creatures if nothing else. Maybe do some more risk taking with activities during the year? |

Special Situations
Morag is Deaf.
Morag was not born deaf but lost her hearing over the span of three years due to genetic causes. Her hearing troubles started when she was four and by the time, she was seven she was completely deaf. However, since she had normal hearing from birth through four years of age, her speech is intelligible, and most would not know she was deaf if they just heard her speak.
Being of both the muggle and wizarding world, she was seen by specialists in both. None could find a cure for her deafness. Which was anticipated since her mother was neither able to be curled by muggle, nor magical means, despite Eoghan having tried every magical treatment once they were married.
When she was diagnosed with hearing loss and they knew she would be completely deaf sooner rather than later, her parents researched potential service animals for her. They finally landed on a capuchin monkey that could be trained to inform her if people were trying to get her attention, or there was an alarm, etc. With the addition of some magical assistance, her capuchin was also trained to interpret for her. As well as having her monkey, she has also learned to read lips which is great one on one, but in classroom or group settings it is almost impossible to keep, sometimes even with Ragnall.
The family took a tour of Hogwarts to discuss her disability and accommodations that could be made the summer she received her letter. The addition of the wipe board and quick quotes quill, and the potential for an interpreter as needed would add to her ability to succeed in her education. In addition, she was hoping that the quick quotes quill could be charmed, or the professors be encouraged, to phonetically spell the incantations used so she can get the pronunciation correct.
RP SAMPLE (200 words min.)
Tarquin slips into the Great Hall with all the other first years and waits impatiently to be called. Although he is older than his brother, his brother’s name comes before his so Lorcan went first. Lorcan was sorted into Gryffindor. That took some of the excitement out of the process for Quin as he assumed that since they were twins, they would be in the same house. When his name was called, he approached the stool and sat confidently, ready to hear the hat call out Gryffindor like it had for his brother.
The hat just sat there for several minutes hmmming in his head. ”Yes, yes your brother is Gryffindor, that is for sure. But you… you are different.” He was quiet again for a few moments, but Quin felt like it was hours. He was starting to wonder what others would think. Then finally the hat spoke. ”Ravenclaw”
Quin stood and started towards the Ravenclaw table which was cheering loudly. He locked eyes with his brother. They both simultaneously shrugged and smirked. “See you on the Pitch.” He mouthed to his brother as he took his seat at the Ravenclaw table. They were best friends, they always would be, but they were their fiercest competition as well. As he took a seat at the Ravenclaw table he wondered if the Sorting Hat did intentionally, or if they really were more different than anyone seemed to think.
