CHILDHOOD. | James was born to Russell and Katheryn Tynan on 13 Nov 2006 in Stafford, Virginia. He has always been incredibly smart for his age, taking quite a lot after his father in this respect. He lived with his parents until his mother died from cancer when he was 8. During his younger years, he tried to gain his mother's favor but found that he would be ignored by her entirely. He did quite a bit as a young child to get her attention, including trying to outdo himself with his learning and even resorting to mischief since he found that he got more of a rise out of her that way. Unfortunately, it really didn't work the way he wanted and he resolved himself to a life without her affection. Because of this, however, his father paid attention to him enough to make up for that - at least that's what it seemed like from James' point of view. James started school at 3 years old and it was soon plainly obvious that he was well and above the level of his peers. With that knowledge, his father pushed hard for him to skip grades entirely to keep him challenged in school. Currently, at 13 years old, James is set to graduate from Brooke Point High School within the next year. Before his father met Carman Jones, it'd just been him and his father at their house but now that they've been seeing each other more consistently, James has started viewing Carman as more of a mother than he remembers his birth mother ever was to him. He's taking his time with that concept, however, since that concept is a bit confusing to him. In recent weeks, however, Carman and his father talked more seriously about James and Russell moving to London where Carman is. James intends to still graduate from Brooke Point remotely. He's also contemplating starting at a no-maj university either in the US or somewhere in Europe, though he's undecided as to where yet. |
SCHOOL YEARS. | School has always been a huge part of their family, so it's no wonder that it continued to be so even as James started pre-k at 3 years old and then moved onto kindergarten and first grade work by the time he was 4. He'd always been highly accelerated, so finished elementary school by the time he was six and was starting high school courses just as he started classes at Ilvermorney. His first year there was a little rocky since it seemed like the teachers really couldn't keep him challenged enough to stay engaged with the rest of the class. He didn't mind being with the others in the class, but it was blatantly obvious that he was so far ahead of his peers that he was bored out of his mind. He was sorted into Horned Serpent at Ilvermorney, just like his father had been, and his teachers contacted Russell as soon as they realized James' potential. With this in mind, they'd set up an accelerated course rate for him. In the end, he ended up coming home in the evenings from school, attending both schools alternately while keeping up with his courses to pass well and above his classmates. However, despite being so far ahead of his peers, his father wants to see his social skills encouraged so James isn't as awkward around his peers as his father is now. Transferring to Hogwarts where he would go in England, he's there at school for the social aspect of being around other kids his age as well as the magical education. |

Working in law enforcement wasn’t easy even without a mass murderer on the loose. Long hours were just part of the job sometimes and it couldn’t be helped. It was rare to get solid time off, never mind an entire weekend, but Carman wasn’t about to say no despite her mind screaming the guilt of taking time while others died. Aarons had insisted, however. No matter, it would just mean that she had the chance to unwind with Russell and James without having to rush through it all. That was the worst part about living across the ocean from each other. Even on the same schedules, they merely passed each other every day.
A few minutes here and there to say good morning and goodnight was all they got. They were still in the first stages of their relationship so, while Carman was entirely in love with Russell and acknowledged this, they needed to wait. For themselves and for James. James. They’d taken to each other almost immediately. The kid was brilliant beyond his years and Carman had been worried that he would take her stepping into their lives as trying to replace his mother but, in reality, the opposite happened. When Russell had nearly died in the boating accident, Carman had been floored but was able to push that aside for the sake of James.
Carman jogged the final few feet to her house and into her foyer, the door closing behind her as she stretched through the workout. This run was a habit of hers that she’d taken to for years now. London wasn’t the greatest in some areas, but her own ability to protect herself made her more confident in running by herself than most women did. Her path led her through the living room and into the small kitchen for a glass of water.
This wasn’t the same house she’d bought with Henry. Hell, it wasn’t even the same side of town. Carman couldn’t handle coming home and not having Henry there with her. The empty house had been a haunting reminder of her failure and while the thought of completely letting the house go hurt, it hurt more being there without him. So, she’d rented a house across the city from it and hadn’t been there since.
A deep breath rose her chest heavily up and down and she shook her head with a small glance at the clock. It was nine forty-five already. That run had gone on a bit longer than she’d originally anticipated, but her mind had been so preoccupied that she hadn’t realized how far she’d run until well into it. An hour later, Carman was showered, dressed, and was packing the last of her things that she’d need for the weekend in America. More than likely, James and Russell were just getting up and around for the day. She smiled absently as she tucked the last bit of her things in the bag on her bed, the usual butterflies gathering in her stomach when she thought of him. Of them.
After making sure all the doors and windows were locked up and the wards were in place properly, Carman grabbed her bag and disapparated from England and reappeared in America moments later. It was a little after six am and the sun had barely decided to wake up yet, though the call from the kitchen told her that Russell and James were most certainly awake. Carman followed the sound of Russell’s voice and smiled at him as he met her in the middle for a kiss, though that was promptly interrupted by James’ ”eww” from the table.
Carman laughed at the young teen. For a kid so set on his father dating, James didn’t like to see the affection shown. Her arm wrapped around Russell’s neck as he pulled her closer and deepened the kiss and she was reluctant to pull from it even as he did. She laughed again and rustled James’ hair, causing him to yell out a protest.
”That would be lovely,” Carman responded to Russell’s question of breakfast, suddenly realizing that she hadn’t had an awful lot to eat yet that morning. Most of breakfast had been catching up with what James was doing in school along with other subjects the kid brought up.
It still surprised her to no end whenever she realized how so far ahead of his peers James was until conversations like this. He was going over subject matter she, herself, hadn’t learned until well into her seventh year at Hogwarts and even afterwards. Quite a bit of her attention was pointed at James, that much was for certain, but occasionally, Carman’s gaze would flit over to Russell only to have his attention already entirely on her. Russell and James were similar in so many ways, but there was nobody like Russell. Even Henry couldn’t have held a candle to him in so much of how they worked together. A smile crept onto her face every time their eyes met. Sure, she’d come over for the weekend to help train James but the real reason was so she could spend this needed time with Russell.
With breakfast finished, Carman gave Russell a kiss before following James out to the studio that had been built in the garage. They’d trained out there time and time again, but they always seemed to find a way to master old techniques as well as find room for new ones – whether that was magical or tactical depended on the lesson. That day Carman had decided to review spells they’d addressed the previous training session and then moved on to hand-to-hand combat.
A witch or wizard with their wand was formidable and it was important to always keep their wands on them, but it was inevitable that there would come a time when they were without their wand. The point of hand-to-hand was to incapacitate and escape if necessary. Aurors needed to know when to fight and when to use these techniques to get away and live another day.
James caught on quickly, though. His skills of analysis lined up well with his physical skills and it wasn’t too long before they were exchanging blows. The time flew by in a flash and before either of them knew it, Russell had returned to the studio stating that lunch was ready. Carman caught the time with a look of surprise but didn’t balk at the orders to eat. If it wasn’t for Russell, there was no doubt that she and James would have missed the time entirely while they were wrapped up in sparring.
Lunch turned out to be just as uneventful and Carman blessed the time that she had when they could simply enjoy the time that they had together without the chaos of war looming over them. With all of the chaos and turmoil happening in England and parts of Europe, Carman knew times like these were few and far between. She was still determined not to allow Russell’s fate to match Henry’s but refused to allow her mind to stay down there for long. For how much she’d loved Henry, she found the love for Russell and James swell far greater. They’d become her world and couldn’t imagine life without them now.
With James showered and disapparated over to his grandmother’s house, Carman melted into Russell’s embrace and kiss. They had so little time together that it seemed like these golden moments were fleeting. It only made her treasure them that much more.
“Of course,” Carman responded with a nod and a smile, following Russell to the bag he’d packed nearby. 41 degrees. Carman did the maths in her head, still not entirely used to America’s way of telling the temperature but got the gist of what he was saying regardless. Either way, it was a cool afternoon, and it might turn colder depending on the weather where they went. She wasn’t sure how the weather worked in Virginia, it was still something she was learning, but if it was anything like what she was used to in England, it could change remarkably fast. At least Russell was prepared.
With his hand gripping her own, Carman returned the squeeze of it, then felt the familiar sensation of disapparation. One moment they were standing in Russell’s house, the next they appeared in a small stand of trees that stood by itself. Already, Carman found a smile creeping onto her face. It’d been a long time since she’d been able to just enjoy nature without having to worry about other things. This was the perfect way to unwind after the last months of this awful case that had landed on her desk. She stepped through the break in the branches that Russell held back for her and followed him onto the small, well-worn path that took them through the woods.
The smell of nature was soothing, and Carman took a deep breath of the scents around them. Trees reached for the sky all around them, the sun glowing brightly overhead. The sounds of birds, insects and some animals created the unique song of the forest, something she could have listened to for hours without growing bored. Carman’s gaze moved from the unique trees and rock formations over to Russell with a smile.
“It is truly wonderful,” she responded softly, noting the sounds of rushing water growing louder with each step they took. Their conversation was punctuated by more of the sounds of the forest around them, Carman losing track of time as she took in her surroundings. So, before she knew it, they came around a bend in the path where the trees thinned and opened to a river and what looked like a series of waterfalls that glistened and glittered in the sunlight.
Her breath caught in her throat, her pale blue eyes widening and marveling at the scene in front of her. She couldn’t get enough of this, no matter how long she stared at it. With his arms around her and her elbows resting on the railing of a small bridge, Carman could see so much around them. Her gaze pulled from the nature around them over to Russell briefly, smiling as he kissed her on the cheek.
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” she whispered as a response and turned her attention back to the rushing waters again. “I can only imagine what kind of lesson that turned out to be for him.” Carman didn’t know the rest of the story, but she could certainly fill in some of the blanks on what kinds of experiments and theories the two of them came up with to prove themselves right or wrong. When she was younger, the only thing she worried about was trying not to fall out of a tree she was climbing. It never mattered the maths around things or the science surrounding climbing or conquering a challenge. All that mattered was chasing that high and taking on any dare.
“I’m sure you know that England has plenty for waterways. Rivers, oceans, and the like. But waterfalls like this aren’t common there. It’s been far too long since I’ve been out in nature to unwind.” Carman paused and leaned back slightly so her body was flush with his, and turned her head so she could look up at him again. “Thank you. I needed to disconnect from the world for a bit.” The smile returned and she pulled him in for a long kiss. Just like at the house, Carman was reluctant to pull from the kiss. Instead, she shifted herself in his arms to put her back to the railing and pulled him closer with her arms around his neck, deepening the kiss. The more she could forget about the stresses of her job and lose herself in Russell, the better it would be. For the moment, Carman wanted nothing more than to fade away from society and just escape with him until it was time to return again.
