DAVEN CURSIVE
15 April 15, 2004 STUDENT HOGWARTS|RAVENCLAW|5TH YEAR HALFBLOOD LONDON, ENGLAND | PERSONALITY: Daven is a loner. He has a few friends, but no one he always hangs out with. He’s usually on his own. He’s been trying to see everything that is in Hogwarts, quite literally. He has a collection of notebooks about every corridor of the place that he has ventured in. He is trying to make a map of the place. What can be found in every room. He still has a long way to go until he has gone everywhere in Hogwarts. Adventurous, Bored, Curious, Forgetful, Impatient, Superstitious He doesn’t care about schoolwork at all. It’s amazing he has made it to his sixth year actually. He must get tutored by somebody. None of the classes really interest him, except for Astronomy. And that’s only because he’s a big fan of StarTalk hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson, which he watches on YouTube. He finds most of them boring. Potions, merely recipes. He always forgets his count while stirring and ends up blowing up his section of the classroom. It’s a wonder he was able to make the love potion correctly. In a way, he’s a bore. As soon as you meet him, you know everything you need to know about him. He’s extremely transparent. He’s very honest. He’s down to earth. If he likes you, he’ll talk your ear off, but if he doesn’t know you, he probably won’t talk to you at all. Unless there’s a reason for him to. He loves Astronomy though. He has a basketball painted blue hanging from the ceiling at one end of his dorm room and a tennis ball painted white hanging from the ceiling exactly 23.5 feet away from the basketball. The basketball is supposed to be the Earth and the tennis ball is supposed to be the moon. They would be 23.5 feet away from each other in scale. His favorite person is Neil Degrasse Tyson, the American muggle astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. Whenever he can, he watches his Startalk videos on Youtube. Actually if you see him at all, that’s probably what he’s doing. What is your character like? What drives them? What do they enjoy? Please describe your character's personality in detail here. Pl ASPIRATION: Daven would undoubtedly love to meet Neil deGrasse Tyson, his hero. The problem is that Daven has no ambition really. He doesn’t care about school, has no interests except for Astronomy, but doesn’t want to do the hard work of an astrophysicist. He appreciates that the names might be easy to understand, but the concepts are a little hard to understand, but somehow he does it. What does the future hold for your character? What is something they would love to do, or have happen? Please describe them here. | LIKES: Playing pranks. Keeps himself from getting too bored. Astronomy. – Neil deGrasse Tyson Roaming Hogwarts-and mapping it out Listening to musicals and jazz music- -Hanging out with the few friends he has - DISLIKES: Being questioned about his pranks – those few times he might have suspicion on him -Every class besides Astronomy. CHILDHOOD. | Daven’s parents loved Daven very much. They were busy people and had Daven’s grandparents take turn watching after him as they were busy at work. His mother was with Daven when he was a baby, but when she was able to return to work, she did. She might even have brought Daven to work with her. Daven did his first magical act when he was five years old. He found a piece of chocolate and was going to open it. It was wrapped up in a foil wrapper. So while Daven was unwrapping it, his mother took it away from him. Saying something about wait until after you eat. So he did, though he really wanted the piece of chocolate! After he ate whatever he was supposed to eat, his mother cut the chocolate in half and gave him one. He wanted both pieces. She said he could have the piece of chocolate, didn’t she? Cutting it in half wasn’t fair. So Daven wanted it so badly that he thought about it so hard, that it moved to him. And it flew to him. His mother couldn’t believe it! Daven thinks she let him have it as a celebration of him first magical feat. Daven’s parents knew how to make lessons fun and interesting. But they celebrated when he received the letter from Hogwarts. Probably because they didn’t have to teach him anymore, he thought. That was now the responsibility of the Hogwarts professors. Daven’s parents taught him how to use a computer when he was nine. He was always interested in those glowing lights in the sky. His parents said they were stars. And Daven just looked up at them in amazement. That’s when his parents started teaching him Astronomy. Of course, they didn’t tell him that at the time. They pointed to the dark sky and asked do you see what looks like a pan? One of the dippers. Daven said yeah, it does look like a pan, doesn’t it? They laughed, but they were teaching Daven the names of the different stars and constellations in the sky. Later, Daven’s parents bought him a telescope. The large bright white thing they called the moon also caught his attention. Later that week, Daven’s father came home with a basketball and a tennis ball and blue and white paint. He asked Daven if he wanted to hang them from the ceiling. Don’t you play with them? Daven asked. I guess you could, his father told him. But we can paint them if you like. The basketball will be blue and the tennis ball will be white. Guess why? Daven looked at his father for a moment. They talked about the moon and the earth and Daven was sure he remembered that they said Earth from outer space was blue. And hang them in my room? Daven asked his father. Daven’s father laughed and hugged him. I knew I liked you, his father said. Yeah, I like you too. Daven said. They laughed. . |
SCHOOL YEARS. | When Daven went to Hogwarts, he never experienced the same fun or interest he had when his parents were teaching him. Maybe they were better teachers, who knows? It might be because they weren’t so strict with rules as the professors were, he decided. Daven hung up his blue basketball and white tennis ball within 23.5 feet from each other The earth was on one side of the dorm room and the moon was on the other side. It just made Daven laugh how much smaller the room seemed to be from my bedroom at home. He wasn’t able to put them in the common room, which was too bad. It might’ve gotten other students interested in Astronomy, who knows? He liked flying on the broom, but didn’t like quidditch much. He never understood the game. If you can call it that. Why would they call it a match, if it’s a game? So you score points, okay. That part Daven understood. But then if somebody catches a small hummingbird like flying ball, you get enough points to win the game. Who cares about making the points then? Just have everybody on the team go after that stupid hummingball thingy! Daven thought. It doesn’t matter how many points the other team scores, they should catch it fast enough to win the match if the entire team goes after it. It might be interesting to see how close the match would be if one team was so busy making points while the other team was flying after the hummingball thingy. Daven was very curious about the castle. To the point that he wandered through so many corridors day and night. Then he got the idea of drawing a map of each floor, if he could. And he kept it with him as he ventured into other corridors. He made sure he had a copy hidden in his room just in case he lost the map or a professor confiscated it for some reason. This was definitely more interesting than classes were. He found that out in the first couple of weeks. Some kids were interesting and fun to be around, Daven thought. He met some in classes and they helped him with their classwork. And definitely helped him in Potions. The professor probably got tired of him blowing the lab up so the professor probably quietly assigned a student to help him out with potions classwork. It took a few before there was one student Daven could get along with. While he hated and didn’t understand quidditch, Daven made it to some of Ravenclaw matches, mostly because he didn’t have anything better to do. In Daven’s third year, he realized that he liked guys more than he liked girls. Guys usually get along with other guys easier than they do with girls and vice versa. But he felt he liked being with guys a little more though. And he realized that he might be gay. He kept that realization to himself for a while. He’s still not out to anyone. He doesn’t know if his folks would be all right with it. Maybe his mother would be, he thought, but he doesn’t know if his father would be. There are a few guys in his classes that Daven likes. He’s been a little shy in how to talk to them, but as he gets older, he’s finding ways to start conversations with them. Especially in classes they have together. Talk about your first year, how exciting it was to begin school and explore the wonders of the magical world (maybe for the first time if you are muggleborn?), talk about significant events that occurred during your school years. Use the site timeline as a reference as there might be important events you can talk about. Min. 200 words. |

RP SAMPLE (200 words min.)
Oh God! Saul screamed inside. Oh God! Oh God! Oh God! He forgot his sheet music for his audition for his school musical. How could this be happening? He asked himself. Yeah, he knew. If he wasn’t so intensely nervous about the audition, he wouldn’t be so wound up and – Everybody knows the song “Master of the House” from Les Miserables, don’t they? It should be a cake walk – but OH GOD! How could he forget his lousy sheet music for his audition? He raised his hand in class. His name was called.
“Yeah, hi.” Saul said, very nervously. “Can I go to the bathroom, please?”
What? The teacher really wanted an answer to the question of what they read in the second chapter of To Kill A Mockingbird? Was she serious? Saul couldn’t wait to get out of the classroom! Now if only he could get out of school without anybody seeing him and drive home, get the damned sheet music and drive back!
Oh no! Again he screamed inside himself. He had totally forgotten about security. He showed the security guard his hall pass to go to the bathroom. Oh, wrong direction? Sorry, he was new. He was still trying to get his bearings.
Great! Superb! Now what? Wait. The library! Maybe he could get it online somehow. Yeah, right, of course. People pay a lot of money for sheet music. And you expect to find it online? Dude, why don’t you just shoot yourself in the foot before your freaking dance recital? Audition. Dance recital. Doesn’t matter. WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO?
He stopped in the hall. Would going to the library do any good? He wondered as he turned around in the hall. What else could he do? Not a hell of a lot. Library, he decided. He turned around again. He had to try something!
He ran to a staircase and ran upstairs a couple of floors. He went into the library and found the computers, after he got directions to find them. He took out his school ID to log into the computer and went to Google. He typed in “Master of the House Sheet music.” And he found it. YES! He actually found it. He found it! He found it! He found it!
It cost $5.99. That didn’t matter. He had his debit card in his wallet, he could pay for it easily. As he was trying to put the sheet music into the cart, go into the cart and pay for it, the bell rang. His class ended and another one was about to start. Get the sheet music! Must get the sheet music! Everything’s riding on this smegging audition! <p>
He successfully paid for the sheet music and then hit print. Nothing. What now? He was totally freaking out! It didn’t help that the librarian came by and told him he was supposed to go to his next class.
“Yeah, but I’m trying to print something and it’s not – “ Saul started to say. He tried to calm down. “The printer isn’t working.”
The librarian apologized and looked at the printer. Hmmm. She opened the paper tray and of course, it was empty. What else could go wrong? What else? What else? The librarian went to a closet not far away from where they were, opened it and took out a ream of paper. She returned to the printer and put the paper into the tray.
Okay then, print! Print! Why wasn’t it printing? Wait, Saul pressed the print button. Still, nothing. Wait, what was that? Saul heard an insanely loud noise.
Suddenly, he found himself in his bed and he banged his fist repeatedly on his alarm clock.
OH MY SMEGGING GOD! YOU HAVE GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!
And yes, Saul ran out of his house that morning without the sheet music to “Master of the House” for his audition.
