CHILDHOOD. | Zuri enjoyed a comfortable childhood, growing up in an upper-middle-class family. Her mother, a foreign languages Professor at the University of Liverpool, met her father, a Slytherin alumnus when they were young; they married and had four children together. As the only daughter, Zuri faced high expectations, and her mother sometimes struggled with jealousy due to Zuri's close bond with her father. While these strains were often kept in check, Zuri sometimes found herself on the receiving end of her mother’s sharp criticism. Encouraged to embrace both her magical and Muggle heritage, she actively participated in the Girls Guides and was encouraged to learn several languages, including French, Spanish, and German, under her mother’s guidance. Her father, a Potioneer with a business of his own, always had a reputation for serving less-than-savoury clients and still does to this day, which explains why Zuri often found herself roaming the darker corners of Knockturn Alley after graduation. Fortunately, from a young age, she was reassured that she wouldn’t be expected to take over the family business, which alleviated some of the pressure on her already heavy shoulders. SCHOOL YEARS. | Zuri’s school years were fairly slow. She had always pictured Hogwarts as a grand, fascinating place where anything was possible, thanks to her father’s stories. However, she quickly learned that not all dreams come true and he likely threw in a few embellishments. After several unsuccessful attempts to make the Quidditch team, she struggled to reach the heights of her more accomplished peers. Her grades were mostly average, with Care of Magical Creatures being the sole exception—much to her father's disappointment, as he had hoped she would excel in Potions instead. Despite her mother’s high expectations, Zuri effortlessly avoided scrutiny throughout her time at Hogwarts, buoyed by a large circle of friends who helped preoccupy her with what she perceived as her many shortcomings. In social settings, she thrived and was generally well-liked, although a few individuals remained resistant to her charms. Boys and drama came easily to her; she had her share of flings and flirtations and enjoyed stirring the pot—though she would vehemently deny it if confronted. A natural gossip, she was frequently found at the back of the classroom, whispering about the latest happenings with unexpected people, murmuring, “so she said this,” or “he did that,” always careful to keep her own involvement concealed. This penchant for gossip likely sparked her desire for destruction, as she was never at the scene of the crime, but always somewhere close by to watch it unfold. In her seventh year, Zuri developed an intense fixation with darker magic, influenced by her father's business dealings. Since graduation, she has kept this interest under wraps, expertly blending in while preserving her carefully crafted facade. |
ADULTHOOD. | Zuri had always excelled at photography, often arguing that if she hadn’t been sorted into Slytherin, she would have fit right in with Ravenclaw for her creativity alone. It was no surprise that she quickly found her way to Witch Weekly—not only for the outlet it provided for her artistic talents but also for the platform it offered her. With a preference for the finer things in life, indulged by her father, working in fashion felt like a natural choice. She had a knack for putting together stunning outfits, and everyone repeatedly praised her pretty face, which certainly contributed to her inflated ego. While her friends from school dispersed to pursue their own careers, hobbies, and families, Zuri remained unfazed. She had a gift for making friends wherever she went and craved relationships with those in higher places—far from the receptionists at the Ministry of Magic or stay-at-home mothers, but she would never say that to their faces. Beyond her work at Witch Weekly, Zuri roamed the streets of Knockturn Alley, always on the lookout for excitement. Whether she was eavesdropping on conversations, drawing someone into her orbit, or visiting "The White Wyvern" for three shots of tequila—never more, lest she become too loose-lipped—she thrived in the underbelly of the wizarding world. If you asked Jackie, she’d tell you she was ecstatic to be back at Hogwarts. She’d go on about how she spent her summer sailing from Southampton to Denmark and Norway with her mother, ate at a Michelin-star restaurant, and even met Joey Essex ("of TOWIE fame," as she’d eagerly clarify, thinking people knew who that was). But the truth? Jackie wasn’t exactly eager to be back at Hogwarts. Well, maybe that wasn’t entirely true either.
She was happy to return—the food, the breathtaking scenery, the infinite nooks and crannies to investigate. She even loved the ghosts, who made the lonely corridors feel less isolating. But what she wasn’t overjoyed about was the dreaded return to classes. Wasn’t it enough that she was already a Witch? Now she had to suffer through second-year Transfiguration, a class so boring it could put her to sleep if she wasn’t planted in the front row, that is.
“Flintifors. What does it do? Any takers? Miss… Devlin?”
Like a deer caught in headlights, Jackie froze. “Latin isna—” she began, then quickly remembered her mother’s nagging about speaking correctly. “Latin is not my strong suit, Professor. Neither is Transfiguration. If I had to guess… it creates flint?”
“Wrong.”
At that moment, Jackie could’ve melted into her chair. The snickering behind her—from a Hufflepuff, of all people—caused her cheeks to burn redder than a spot on the Professor's cheek. That was new, by the way. Every Transfiguration class, Jackie made a habit of counting how many spots the professor had—something to keep her entertained when the lesson dragged. And that particular spot? Definitely wasn’t there last week.
She leaned over to the Gryffindor boy sitting next to her, the one with black hair and green eyes, whom she’d mentally anointed "the fourth member of Green Day" because she’d never troubled herself to learn his name and he looked like he could play in the band. “Tough crowd,” she mumbled.
He didn’t find it funny. She could tell by the look on his face. But that was fine; Jackie was used to it. Not many people found her funny—at least she found herself funny, and that was what mattered.
