11 August 8, 2009 student Hogwarts Slytherin First Mugglebourn Hogwarts | Beddgelert, Gwynedd, Wales | PERSONALITY: Ainsley grew up with a chip on her shoulder, with a feeling of always being lesser and not enough, and that certainly hasn’t changed since learning about magic. It’s probably her biggest insecurity. She constantly feels like she is being compared to others, whether it was her brothers at home or other students now that she is at Hogwarts. She feels lost and is afraid of being left behind, which makes her work exponentially harder than most. She wants nothing more than to fit in, and she feels like she has to be the best at everything in order to accomplish that. Thankfully, she enjoys challenges quite a bit. She’s not stupid, but she’s not one of those people who are easily gifted in learning, which is why she has to put so much effort into it. She’s always been the curious type, and exposure to magic has caused that curiosity to explode. In her mind, she is constantly asking what magic can do and what are its limits, but she is too worried about being thought stupid to ask the questions out loud. Instead, she has developed a bit of an independent streak when it comes to learning. In her desire to be the best, she isn’t exactly afraid to step on other people’s toes. She’s always been strong-willed, and she can come off as rude, brash, a bit of a know-it-all in an attempt to bury those insecurities as deep as she can possibly manage. As terrified as she is of not being enough and not fitting in, she comes across as quite the goody two-shoes. She’s not going to remind teachers that they assigned homework they didn’t collect (she’s not crazy and doesn’t want everyone to hate her), but she’s not stepping a toe out of line. Partially because she’s terrified of what magical punishments look like and partially because she’s afraid of getting shipped back home and the humiliation that will bring. Ainsley wants friends, but she can be a little bit difficult to manage, as she has recently developed the bad habit of trying to turn everything into a competition that she will try to win at all costs. She manages to be both a sore loser (as she blames everything but her own shortcomings when things don’t go her way, even if it is clearly her fault) and a sore winner that acts like she’s better than others. However, once she has friends - close friends, the type you can trust with everything-, she’ll do everything to keep them. ASPIRATION: Ainsley wants nothing more than to fit in. She knows it will be a struggle, surrounded as she is in Slytherin by people who all seem to be rich and with magical backgrounds (at least, that is the stereotype in her mind), but she hopes to at least make some friends in her house, and in the other houses as well. Her vision of fitting in means excelling in magic, so her goal is to be at, or at least near, the top of her class in every class. As she learns more about the magical world, she’ll see quidditch as the ultimate way to fit in, so she plans on joining the team as soon as she can and being a star. Seeker will be her main goal, as that seems to be the one who gets all the praise and glory that she is after. For that reason, she also plans on joining in the dueling club, as she sees that as the ultimate way to show how much she belongs in this world (especially if she wins as much as she wants to). The longer she is in the magical world, the more she’ll want to set herself apart in terms of talent. She’ll want to learn everything, including the things that are most challenging. She will eventually want to study to be an animagus when she’s old enough, as she will see that as the most difficult of magical arts when she learns about it, though she will likely never achieve it, at least not without experiencing some horrible complications along the way. She currently doesn’t know enough about the magical world to know what she wants to do when she grows up. Her ultimate aspirations are currently childish with wanting to be rich and famous for something, though she doesn’t know what yet. Honestly, she’s just trying to go one day at a time and try to seem normal. | LIKES: - winning - blues and purples - fruity lip balms - challenges - learning - quiet places - puzzles - the Hogwarts library - magic - sports - stealing her brother's sweatshirts DISLIKES: - losers - whiners - loud places - winter storms - dirt - bugs of all kinds - having her picture taken - Obnoxiously bright colors (like neons) - being alone |

CHILDHOOD. | Ainsley’s family has a distinct before and after with her birth being the line of demarcation. Before, her family seemed happy. Her mother worked at a local store while her father taught maths at the local school. They had three boys. They weren’t well off, but they had enough. And, most importantly, they were whole. Then there was the after. Ainsley knows she was an oopsy baby, as her closest brother in age was nine years older than her. She was born a month early, her mother passing in the process, leaving a single grieving father with four minor children that he could barely support, three of whom were also grieving. Her father tried to make things normal, but Ainsley grew up knowing that things weren’t quite right. Her father and brothers treated her like she was made of glass, like the simple stumbles of childhood would break her. She wasn’t allowed to do anything fun, not like her brothers. Ainsley grew up feeling other. The youngest by a long shot. The only girl. The reason her mother was dead. The one who couldn’t play sports because of her father’s fears. The one who wasn’t as smart as the boys. The one who was never enough.

SCHOOL YEARS. | Ainsley had less than a month to prepare to leave everything she knew behind. It was terrifying, to say the least, but also kind of incredible, you know? She was so excited but also missing home the second she stepped on the train. She kept to herself on that first train ride to Hogwarts. There were a couple of other younger students in her compartment as well, because she wasn’t so lucky as to get one all to herself, but they were all sort of quiet. As much as Ainsley would deny otherwise, her quietness was due solely to nerves. What if it was a mistake? After all, she couldn’t recall any types of accidental magic. What if she isn’t good enough? What if she got sent home? They were quiet on the boats as well, at least until they all gasped at the sight of the castle sitting magnificently in the distance. After a hat stall with all four houses being considered, she was sorted into Slytherin. She fears that she is far behind the others, especially since so many in her house seem to come from a magical background. Yet, with hard work, she hasn’t managed to embarrass herself in classes. In fact, she thinks she’s doing quite well despite her disadvantages. Her favorite classes are the ones involving actual magic, but she finds herself excited to learn everything. |

Her eyes stopped wandering around the Great Hall when one of the adults started talking and fixated on them. Her gaze then fell to the sorting hat when it started talking. Or, rather, singing. She furtively shot quick glances toward the other first years, wondering if she was the only one to find that so strange. Because a talking (or singing) hat was not normal. Right? Nonliving things weren’t going to just randomly start talking to her, were they? Because that was super weird, at least in her mind. Perhaps those who had grown up around magic weren’t so freaked out.
So distracted by the prospect of a singing hat, Ainsley didn’t quite take in what it was saying. Before she knew it, the song was over, and others in her group were being called to the front. Thank goodness they were going by last name! Otherwise, she would be one of the first instead of getting to watch a few turns before she had to go.
Except, she didn’t get much of what was going on. It was just some other kid sitting on a stool for varying amounts of time followed by the hat shouting. How did it make its decision? Ainsely would have rather learned that before it was her turn, but she was called up to the front before she could even come up with a guess. She tried to keep her expression neutral as she made her way to the sorting hat.
Sitting on the stool, she avoided cringing before the musty old hat landed on her head, and she tried not to think of how many hundreds of heads that hat had sat on. Blech. But she couldn’t dwell on that because the hat was talking to her.
It seemed to go forever, the hat circling back around to all of the houses, eliminating them and adding them back in. Hopefully it was just her imagination as to how long it took before the hat shouted, “SLYTHERIN!”
