FAMILY MEMBERS. | Father: Nikandr Pyotrovitch Laskin – 48; Wandmaker Mother: Kindra Lova Laskin – 46; stay at home society wife. Brother: Pyotr Nikandrvitch Laskin – 16; Student Durmstrang |
CHILDHOOD. | Alendra is the eldest child of Nikandr and Kindra Laskin. From the moment of her birth, she was the biggest disappointment of her father who had wanted and had been expecting a son. She was raised by her mother and at least acknowledged by her father until her younger brother was born when she was six. Then she became the invisible child. Except when something went wrong at work, or something was broken in the house. Regardless of the reason or the actual person who caused it, she was the one who took the brunt of the punishment. She’d been hit with her father’s belt so often growing up, by the time she was seven, he couldn’t wield it hard enough to make her cry anymore. Which just infuriated him more, but her mother would not allow him to strike her otherwise. She was expected to toe the line and not be seen or heard once her father came home from work. She learned to entertain herself and spent many hours “reading” in the garden. Or at least that was what she told her mother she was going to do. Typically, she would sneak off to the back of the property with a broom she had stolen from a local shop to practice flying. One of her favorite past times was catching reptiles that wandered onto her property. She kept a collection of snakes and lizards in one of the spare rooms in her home that not even the servants ventured into. Her father eventually was tipped off too their existence and she was allowed to keep one. She decided to keep Zemi, a five-foot piebald ball python she had stolen from a local pet store, moved him into her bedroom and focused on caring for him and flying. The only things in life that gave her any joy or sparked any sort of passion in her. |
SCHOOL YEARS. | School could not start soon enough for Alex. Being the invisible child and six years older than the golden child, she was looking forward to the opportunity to finally be out of the house. She started at nine as a day school student, heading home every evening to be ignored while she struggled with trying to catch up to where her classmates were. She realized early on that her lack of parental involvement set her well behind her peers. She couldn’t read much beyond a first-grade level, basically struggled with anything that wasn’t related to flying. Her best friend, Issan, was in her year and was brilliant at pretty much everything but flying. So, they teamed up, Issan helping Alex to catch up on basic academics and Alex helping Issan learn to fly. She had never thought to figure out what Issan’s background was, but once her father found out Issan was not Pureblood, he forbade Alex from associating with him. Alex promptly ignored the orders and continued with their friendship but neglected to ever mention his name again while at home. Life became simpler for her once she turned eleven and was able to stay at school almost permanently. The only downside to that was she had to trust Pyotr to tend to Zemi. At least for the first two years, until she had shown enough promise in Care of Magical Creatures to be allowed to bring him to school. The snake stayed with her most of the time, curled up in her bag in class or wrapped around her neck any other time. The only times that Zemi would be confined would be when she had quidditch practice. She had made the school quidditch team as keeper at thirteen, surprising even her parents, who reluctantly consented and funded her ambition to excel on the pitch. She focused on flying and quidditch almost to the exclusion of her other studies and Issan had to continue to remind her that unless she graduated, there wasn’t a team out there that would pick her up. Issan was the one constant in her life that she would never abandon. And she would spend many a time in detention for standing back to back with Issan against those who bullied them or others. Issan never asked for it, never wanted it really, but Alex felt compelled to stand up with her friend regardless of the consequences. If something went missing in the school, it could usually be found among Alex’s things. Not that any but Issan knew this. And neither of them would say anything. By her last year at Durmstrang, she was actively stealing tests from professors and selling answers to the younger students. She never did get caught and made a decent enough profit in that year that she would not need to return to her family home for at least for several month while she figured out what to do with herself. Those who say cheating on wizarding level exams is impossible, had never met Alex and Issan. Or perhaps, Alex’s scores overall were too low in general for anyone to bother checking to see if she was cheating. Her strategy was only to pass as she really could care less for the majority of subjects. The only thing she ever excelled at was quidditch, and that dedication paid off. She was scouted as a 7th year and given the opportunity to join the Falmouth Falcons, but she declined at that time wanting both to graduate as well as hoping to be picked up by her favorite team the Bulgarian National team. |
ADULDHOOD. | Alexandra graduated, barely and mostly due to Issan helping her to cheat her way through exams. Disappointingly she was not scouted by the Bulgarian National team, however the Falmouth Falcons increased their offer and she signed with them over the Chudly Cannons or the Kenmare Kestrals. She sat the bench for the first two years out of school, but in her third year their first-string keeper had a mysterious accident that left her unable to return to the pitch mid-season and Alexandra took her place. Alex proved herself easily within the first few games and any suspicion or misgivings that had surfaced about her quickly disappeared. Having settled into a starting position with the team, Alex found a place she liked and moved Issan to share the place with her. Issan had taken a training position within St. Mungos but had decided after a couple years that it was not for him. Instead, he managed to find a job as a shopkeeper in a nearby wizarding town while he decided what he wanted to do. Alex didn’t really care, she was just glad her best friend was there. He’d seen that she survived school where she was anything but comfortable, it seemed now was her turn to help him survive life outside of the structured walls of home and school. Intent on keeping her job and keeping out of Ministry files, Alex curbed her propensity for obtaining things without exchanging them for the appropriate amount of currency. Well at least within the wizarding community. Within the Muggle communities she never worried about being caught. The long trench coat she usually wore had two magical pockets on the inside. They could expand to fit a full-sized bathtub if one needed but would never show more than a slight lump like stuffing had bunched up. She’d met with a few challenges and had a few muggle cops called on her, but in the end, they could never find the merchandise on her to arrest her. Although she’d though she’d left her parents in the past, she had kept in contact with Pytor. This proved to be a mistake because they showed up to a dinner invitation one evening with Pytor and another wizard in tow. The wizard turned out to be an upstart young doctor who had the audacity to believe that just because her father had accepted some form of payment, that she was going to be his property, wife, whatever the end result of a woman in an arranged marriage was. She promptly tossed them all out of her apartment and had not spoken with anyone in her immediate family since, despite the relentless howlers that made their way to her either at her apartment or at pitch. |

Alex answered the door to the apartment expecting to see her brother, but not expecting to see her parents and a stranger standing behind him. The sheepish look of an apology played at Pytor’s features and Alex’s heart sank.
“Alex, drag that cute brother of yours in here already.” Issan called from the other end of the livingroom where they had magicked the apartment to be larger than it was and had added a formal dining room for the occasion.
Alex laughed as Pytor’s eyes widened. Either he had forgotten about Issan or hadn’t remembered that their parents hated Issan simply because his grandfather had been muggleborn. This was going to be an interesting evening. Regardless, Issan had managed to break the tension and Alex stepped back to allow Pytor and the intruders to enter.
She settled them into the livingroom and slipped into the kitchen with Issan.
“What is your brother playing at?” Issan hissed at her as he caught a glimpse of her parents and some other wizard enter their home.
“I have no idea, but from the look on his face when I opened the door, this should turn out to be an amusing evening for as long as it lasts. Let’s just take drinks out. You can flirt with Pytor all you like, but remember he’s still only 17, so keep it down a bit. Now the other one… he’s all yours if you like.” Alex said with a quick laugh. Issan’s presence would make her parents uncomfortable and hopefully they would leave that much sooner.
Issan rolled his eyes. “Your brother is more my type. Besides if he’s here with your parents… I can only imagine what he’s like.” He grinned at her then turned and added three more glasses of wine to the tray.
“Do you think that’s going to be strong enough?” Alex asked eyeing the drink selection.
“No, but you and I can have something a bit stronger when this lot leaves. Which, most likely will be before dinner even comes out of the oven.” Issan laughed and gave Alex a quick kiss on the cheek. “They may be your parents, but remember you are not a child and you do not owe them a thing.” Issan stated, putting out the flame of self-doubt that had started to burn in her at the site of her parents.
She hadn’t seen them since graduation from Durmstrang. They’d insisted on coming and, since as they reminded her, they had funded her education, she couldn’t do much to stop them. However, once the ceremony was over, she disappeared into the crowd and had gone to celebrate with Issan and his family. She’d ignored every attempt they had ever made to contact her. And now, they were forcing her brother to help try to manipulate her. It wasn’t going to work, not only because she didn’t want it to, but because Issan would back her up and ensure it didn’t.
She took the tray of wine to the other room and offered one to each before setting the tray on the table. She didn’t have time to take a sip, let alone sit down, before her mother started in.
“Alexandra, this place is so small, it is beneath you. And sharing it with the likes of him? I see I neglected some of the more important things when instilling values in you.”
Alex rolled her eyes. “Not that it is any of your business, but I like this place, I am not home enough to need to have a different room for every hour of the day. Issan is my fiancé so I’ll ask you to refrain from any further dispersion being cast in his direction.” Alex did not miss the shattering of glass from the other room, but in the next moment Issan made his entrance, kissing Alex on the cheek and slipping an arm around her. This had been the norm for the bars when someone would recognize Alex and not have the intelligence to take the hint to go away. It was a game they played so often, it was comfortable and convincing by now to those that did not know them.
Her father coughed and set down his drink. “Now see here Alexandra, this…” He indicated the relationship between her and Issan with a wave of his hand. “This has never been approved of. I thought we had been rid of him in your first year?” He started.
Alex went to respond but Issan’s arm tightened around her shoulders, and she bit back any response. Issan was right, giving in to his taunts was not going to do anyone any good. However, as she had not missed the brief exchange of looks between the strange wizard and her father at the mention of Issan, she assumed this had not been simply a social call.
“Alexandra, what your father is trying to say is that we have found you match suited to your status.” She said, then turned to the newcomer. “Aaron here is a doctor at St. Mungos finishing his residency. He’ll be moving back to Greenland when he finishes.”
Alex laughed. “My team and my job are here. I am not going to consider trying to commute from Greenland.”
“You will not be working, and certainly not maintaining a position as a quidditch player once we are married. You can tend to the home and the like and I’ll ensure we are provided with the money we need.” Aaron added, obviously believing that this arranged marriage was still on the table.
Alex felt Issan stiffen and grinned in his direction. He was done playing the hospitable host.
Issan closed his eyes, opened them, and stalked over to the door. Yanking it open he stood there, arms crossed. “And that concludes our hospitality for the evening. When you have learned how to treat Alex with the respect and dignity she deserves, we may attempt this again. However, you sir…” He turned and glared at Aaron. “You are not welcome back.”
Her parents turned from Issan to Alex and her father’s mouth opened as if to say something, but Alex cut him off with a shrug. “You heard Issan, this is our home, and you are not welcome.” Alex said, feeling a bit more courage than she actually had.
Aaron and her parents made their way out and Pytor lingered a bit before following. Alex supposed he was hoping for an invitation to stay.
As he reached the door, Issan stopped him with a gentle hand to the chest. “You…. are welcome here anytime as long as you don’t bring them.” He said leaning to whisper into Pytor’s ear.
Alex did not know what was said, but from the blush that colored her brother’s face from nose to hairline, she could only imagine. As the door closed behind the group, Alex let out a long laugh and hugged Issan tightly to her. “Thank you.” She said simply and the two retired to the kitchen to finish preparing dinner.
