BASIC INFORMATION
| Kevin Barker 32
Feb 28 Grief Counsellor Hogwarts - Hufflepuff Muggleborn London | PERSONALITY: Kevin is a little bit neurotic, a little bit OCD – don’t move his things or he can’t function. He knows where everything is – needless to say, raising two younger brothers was a challenge in that regard. And he likes being in control – not in a dark, dangerous way, he just likes to be the one in charge since he’s been in charge his entire life pretty much. Mum was a flake. However, Kevin is stable, responsible, and the kind of guy who people can and do lean on which is perfect considering his career in healing and grief counselling which he took up a few years after his mother’s death and dealing with his younger brothers.
LIKES: Organization, being in charge, board games, his little brothers (as annoying as they are), fantasy novels, cheese and crackers (as a snack), that nostalgic feeling of being reminded of home or warm past memories
DISLIKES: When Georgie leaves his pants on the kitchen floor, when Frances has a stack of school books piled on his desk and pieces of parchment sticking out every which way, skinny jeans (they look ridiculous on people), rap music (is it even music?), socks that don’t match (and his brothers do this to annoy him!), Coffee
ASPIRATIONS: Kevin has already had a rather eventful career as a Healer and doesn’t quite know where he’d like to go next with his life career-wise. However, he would like to eventually fall in love. He feels like he has missed out on his prime time for meeting someone and falling in love because he has been so busy raising his brothers. It has not been easy! They are wild!

HISTORY
CHILDHOOD:
Kevin Barker was born on February 28, 1986 to Irene Barker and one of her many one night stands, which one? Who knows. That was the trouble with a woman who sold her body to pay the bills. He would never discover who his father was, and it didn’t bother Kevin all that much. Growing up just him and his mother was perfectly fine with Kevin. They were very close all through his childhood. Kevin didn’t want for much. They lived in a one bedroom apartment which was not ideal given her career but there was a kind old lady who lived in the apartment next door to him. She babysat Kevin whenever his mother was entertaining a client. He spent more time with Jan Plume than he did at home. She was sort of a pseudo grandmother to him. It’s pretty apparent that Kevin developed his OCD tendencies from Jan. Everything in her apartment had a place and it was calming for Kevin, who grew up in chaos.
One particular night, in January of 1992, Irene had been entertaining a client when Kevin realized he had not brought his Squishy with him to Jan’s house for the night. Squishy was his stuffed penguin that he had been sleeping with since he was baby and could not sleep without. He left Jan’s apartment when she was in the bathroom and went back to his to get his penguin. He saw his mother and the man and thought (as little kids did) that the man was hurting his mum and that’s when the first incident of rather powerful magic exploded out of Kevin and sent the man flying across the room. His mother was furious. The man refused to pay for her services and Kevin spent the rest of the night locked in the linen closet for being such a bad boy. The money they missed out on meant the difference of having electricity or not for the rest of the month and they spent the month in the dark because of him.
Over the next few years, things went for bad to worse to okay and good again but then Jan died of penumonia and there was no one to look after Kevin when his mother was entertaining. The linen closet became his safe place from the men who came and went and used his mother for their own pleasure. He went from a happy boy who wanted for nothing, to a boy who just wished to escape. Every time his power exploded out of him, he was punished in different ways and then his letter came from Hogwarts.
SCHOOL YEARS:
YEARS 1/2: Having been raised by a single mother in the muggle world, the entire idea of magic was nothing more than a fantasy to Kevin. Something kids indulged in who had the time to indulge. He did not have the time to indulge since he often had to take care of himself. With that being said, when the letter from Hogwarts came, Kevin thought it was a prank. He couldn’t possibly be a wizard and this was some classmate of his playing a prank on the poor kid who longed for a better life and a better mother. Everyone knew his story anyway. When a second letter came, Kevin thought that his classmates were just being pompous but then a man showed up and said he was a wizard and he worked for the Ministry and he was here to help Kevin and his mother adjust to his new life as a wizard. Well, his classmates could not have planned this one. Kevin began to believe, and believe, and believe until he was on a train with a trunk full of second hand textbooks, wearing second hand robes and carrying a wand that had fit perfectly into his hand and felt like it had been made just for him.
He was sorted into Hufflepuff – honestly, wearing a dusty old hat had been the worst part of the trip. It smelled like mildew and moths. He wanted a shower as soon as he took it off. Plus, what if one of the kids had lice?
That’s when things started to change for the better for Kevin. He got to spend most of the year at Hogwarts where there were decent meals, no strange men coming to the house at all hours of the night. He had a bed, which was wonderful! And he was learning magic. He felt like he had walked into a fairytale.
Except, a year later there was a war. Kevin couldn’t go back to school because he was muggleborn – that meant he had no magical parents and his life was in danger. The brief reprieve from his chaotic home life was taken from him as his new life put him in serious danger. But, like all things, the war ended, the good guys won, and life returned to normal. Kevin got to go back to school.
YEARS 3/4: Coming back for his third year after the war was weird. Kevin didn’t fully understand what all his classmates had gone through but he saw the sadness and the grief in their eyes as clearly as he saw the sympathy his muggle neighbours had for him. He didn’t like it and there didn’t seem to be anywhere for these broken people to get the help they needed. Kevin quickly knew what he wanted to be when he finished Hogwarts. Kevin would spend the rest of his teenage years learning magic and developing a love for healing and helping people. He found he really liked order at Hogwarts. He enjoyed the routine and daily grind of classes, curfews, responsible adults to look out for kids like him who were bullied and picked on because of his second hand items. He liked that there was a hierarchy and he knew who to go to when he needed help. Kevin thrived at Hogwarts, even if people began accusing him of being a teacher’s pet and a nerd for getting such good grades but Kevin wanted a better life than what his mother offered him in the muggle world. He wanted it for both of them. She wasn’t a bad person. She just had rotten luck and he could turn it around if he worked hard and studied hard and got the grades he needed for a decent career. If not for Hogwarts, Kevin would never have gotten out of that rotten hotel.
Year 6/7: He’d reached the end of his teenage years where boys had a tendency to get distracted by girls and Kevin was no different. He had a lovely girlfriend in his sixth year and they dated for the duration through the summer and would end up breaking up due to Kevin cheating on her during his internship at St. Mungo’s. He met a fellow intern from another Wizarding School there and sparks flew. He couldn’t help himself. He didn’t exactly have good role models when it came to love and romance so by the time he had graduated from Hogwarts, Kevin found himself single – which was fine. He had bigger worries. He was also a big brother. He knew then that his own life and his own happiness would have to go on hold so he could give this new baby in his life a better life than he had.
ADULTHOOD:
During his final year at Hogwarts, his mother had gotten pregnant again and when he graduated, he came home to meet his new baby brother; Frances. He loved having a little brother and decided that he would do everything he could to ensure Frances had a better life with their mother than Kevin had been given. He began his training to become a Healer – thinking it would be an excellent career to help pay the bills and raise Frances. If nothing else, it would be more stable than his mother’s job. They still lived in that single room apartment but Kevin turned the living room into a boy’s den for himself and his baby brother, leaving his mother to the single bedroom. It was just better that way.
He began training for a Healer in July of 2004. He started in the Artefacts Accident Ward and worked hard to become a good little Healer. Life went by, Kevin paid the bills with his meager income as a trainee and eventually he finished his training. He began working as a part time Healer on the Artefact’s Accident Ward when he was twenty but he found he didn’t love it as much after a year of working part time. It was often the same stupid people doing the same stupid thing and it irritated him. Around age twenty-one, his mother got pregnant again with Georgie and Kevin knew he needed a change and they couldn’t live in that apartment any longer. It was too small. He applied for multiple positions working in different departments part time to get them a down payment on a small house, until his mother died a year after Georgie was born. Kevin gained custody of his brothers and was hired as a full time Healer on the Long Term Resident’s Ward in 2009. A few years later he obtained the position of Full Time Floor Head and began taking courses in grief and trauma counselling in 2012 when he was twenty-six.
Kevin continued to save money, with his mother’s passing they didn’t end up moving out of that one bedroom apartment but Frances and Georgie moved into the room while Kevin continued to live on the couch in the living room. However, in 2015, when Frances was beginning Hogwarts, Kevin had to dip into the house fund to pay for his brothers uniforms and books for school. Second hand even was difficult but they managed. They would just have to live in the apartment longer. At least with Frances at school, Kevin and Georgie had a little more room to spread out. During the time of the Accona Desert Prison, the muggleborn kidnappings and such, Kevin had hid Georgie among muggle students and wasn’t sure how he kept himself out of eyesight of those seeking to capture muggleborns. He worried constantly about Frances’ safety at Hogwarts and was relieved every time an owl came from his brother letting him know he was safe.
When it came time for Georgie to attend Hogwarts, Kevin applied for one of the new counsellor positions so he could supervise his brothers better. He knew it would totally cramp Frances’ style but Georgie was a bit more wild and needed more parental control.
RP SAMPLE
Amen to Soo Rin. Dean's cousin was always hitting the nail right on the head with the hammer or whatever. Muggle phrases eluded him. He didn't understand them but that one meant something about being right and she was right. There was a half-blood in the Stewart line who tarnished the family but fortunately not the name since she was not permitted to carry the Stewart name. A mistake made by his uncle and one he surely regrets, Dean hoped, otherwise there would be more Stewarts cut from the tree. "To align ourselves with any who weak minded and willing to accept this notion of equality is only a means to an end." Dean was right there alongside Roo in those beliefs. It was why they got along well enough. And so many lines had been tarnished.
He actually laughed. "They won't." They would find him someone he disliked. They would bring forth some woman who bored him and sent him into the arms of any and every other woman available and simply because she met the criteria. Dean had no interest in some meek, mild tempered woman other than control. There was no one for Dean Stewart to wed and lay seeds with and continue the family. Besides, what did he need a wife for when he had two children?
He disagreed. "The UK is a stepping stone to the rest of Europe." Their Ministry was the most well known and the most easily corrupted but the wrong people were not holding their positions well enough and getting lost in the power. Dean should have been in charge. Had McPhee not betrayed him, he would have been.
"Pureblood children." He specified. He might not have married Katerina or Rosie but at least they had been women worth impregnating.
