Kai tolerated the snow and cold reasonably well, having been raised in a subtropical climate with humid summers and winters with sporadic snowfall. Yet, the festive spirit that seemed to grip everyone else left him unmoved. Hands dug deep into his pockets, a dark scarf wrapped around his neck and covering half his face, he strolled somewhat aimlessly, eventually gravitating to a spot in the cover of the trees where he could have a quick smoke.
He was caught in his tracks, however, eyes catching a familiar face and the small frame of the timid Avaiki girl. She seemed to be busying herself around a snowman. Without thinking, his feet took him in her direction.
"What are you doing?" he asked, his voice slightly muffled by the scarf but still audible. Eyes scanned the snowman, the way she had delicately placed two stones for beady eyes. How sweet.
"Nice.. very nice," he began, his tone encouraging, until a sudden impulse overtook him. Removing his hand from his pocket, he raised it and gave the snow head a good push until it fell off and landed with a dull
thud next to the upright body.
"I think it looks better like that." Perhaps it was uncalled for, but to him, in that moment, he found it entirely hilarious.
