40 30/07/1980 UNSPEAKABLE HOGWARTS: GRYFFINDOR ALUMNI PUREBLOOD WHITSTABLE, KENT | PERSONALITY: Ever since childhood, Neville has been seen as somewhat of a comic (often unintentionally). His clumsy nature and frequent mistakes often draw a few giggles, particularly from his wife. During his late teen years and his blossoming into adulthood, Neville found his voice. He has now become a fierce campaigner for what he believes is right. He stands up for himself and his loved ones, focusing on providing a voice for those often downtrodden. Despite this, he still lives with his inner demons. When nobody else is around, the courageous facade falters and he sees the nervous little boy looking back at him in the mirror. ASPIRATION: After brief work in the Magical Law Enforcement and working in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Neville feels most comfortable working for the Department of Mysteries. He hopes to progress to a leadership role, with his daughter and doting wife by his side. CHILDHOOD. | Neville Longbottom was born to his parents, Frank & Alice, on a warm summers day in 1980. His parents were successful aurors and had always dreamed of raising a family filled with children and laughter. Unfortunately, fate had other plans. When Neville was just a year old, his parents were attacked by death eaters and tortured until they lost their mental capacity. Whilst the death eaters were sent to prison, Neville's parents were institutionalised and were left to spend the rest of their lives in St. Mungo's hospital. Neville was placed into the care of his grandmother Augusta. Augusta was a stern woman, who held Neville to high standards. There was a lot of love in her heart for the boy, but it was masked by fear manifesting as strictness. He had often spoken about how much he wanted to be like his parents, and Augusta could not stand to see him suffer the same fate. As such, she often tried to dissuade him and told him that he had large shoes to fill. Regardless, they remained close. Augusta frequently took Neville shopping and helped him pick his first familiar: Trevor the toad. Since a young age, Neville was particularly keen on reptiles and amphibians. It was almost destiny that Trevor became his first companion. |
SCHOOL YEARS. | First Year Neville was of firm belief that he belonged in Hufflepuff, but he was sorted into Gryffindor house after a short debate with the sorting hat. He instantly found himself involved in several magical incidents, breaking his wrist during one of these. He underperformed in most subjects, apart from Herbology. Neville found himself making friends with Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger after they helped him during these problems. As a result of his general clumsiness and shy disposition, Neville was a target for bullying from Draco Malfoy and his friends. Second Year Neville managed to get through this year with slightly less broken bones, but still several magical incidents. He particularly struggled in Professor Gilderoy Lockhart's class and became somewhat of a target for Professor Severus Snape to berate in front of his peers. Third Year His third year at Hogwarts was one of his most difficult. He started the year meeting a dementor on the train, who was thankfully banished by Professor Remus Lupin. Neville became more of a target for Professor Snape, who taunted him by stating that he would feed his potions to his toad. He was left so terrified that his boggart assumed to form of Professor Snape. Neville also received his first howler from his grandmother, who advised him he bought shame upon the Longbottom family. Fourth Year Neville remained close to Harry, Ron and Hermione and started to hang out with them a little more during his fourth year. His talent in Herbology was noticed by both Professor Sprout and Professor Moody, who rewarded him. Unfortunately, Professor Moody was not as kind as he seemed. Neville endured being put under his first unforgivable this year, after being used as a demonstration for the imperius curse. He went on to grow closer to Ginny Weasley and invited her to the Yule Ball (as friends, to allow her to attend). Fifth Year Before the year had properly commenced, Neville received a mimbulus mimbletonia from his great-uncle. He also befriended Luna Lovegood and joined Dumbledore's Army. He flourished under the mentorship of Harry Potter and his confidence continued to grow. It was this year that Neville discovered the death eaters who tortued his parents had escaped from Azkaban, and he too became a target. Bellatrix tortured him with the cruciatus curse to try and see if she could crack his mental wellbeing. Sixth Year Neville was ridiculed by a student named Romilda Vane, but Harry acknowledged that Neville had rapidly become one of his closest friends. He obtained four OWLs, including Herbology and Defence Against Dark Arts. He participated in the Battle of the Astronomy Tower and attended the funeral for Albus Dumbledore. Seventh Year Lord Voldemort took over the Ministry of Magic and Professor Severus Snape assumed the position of Headmaster. Neville, Luna and Ginny revived Dumbledore's Army. Neville was targeted by Amycus and Alecto Carrow for being the ringleader of rebellion. He stood up for his cause in front of Voldemort and endured the burning sorting hat, which rewarded him with the Sword of Gryffindor. Neville then used this to kill Nagini and render Lord Voldemort "mortal". |
ADULTHOOD. | Straight after the Wizarding War, Neville decided to prove everybody wrong by following in his parents footsteps and becoming an Auror. He struggled in this role, and although it felt rewarding, he felt as though he was neglecting his real love of Herbology. After a whirlwind romance with Luna Lovegood, she encouraged him to follow his dreams and he applied for a role as Herbology Professor at Hogwarts. Neville and Luna's romance was comparable to that of most people in their early twenties. It moved incredibly fast and burnt out just as quickly. On his acceptance to work at Hogwarts, he split with Luna and started the first chapter of his new life. He fell for another one of his former classmates, Hannah Abbott. She was a landlady at the Leaky Cauldron and they soon moved in together. This romance bought him the closure he needed. With Hannah being somewhat more in the background during their school days, she was able to provide more of the nurturing romance that he needed. He didn't have to worry about triggers or gossip. He could finally exhale and drop his mask. Hannah and Neville got married and found themselves the subject of Rita Skeeter's gossip columns. This only worsened once their daughter Phoebe was born. She often wrote about them being careless, enjoying parties and being alcoholics. This was the final straw for Neville, and he cracked. He suffered with a mental breakdown after once again being thrust into the public eye. He resigned from his job and moved into a humble little cottage in Whitstable, a seaside town by the Kent coast. Hannah and Phoebe were Neville's biggest supporters and nursed him back to stability by the coast. His daughter became his main focus and his reason to remain strong, and his wife was his cheerleader. Once Phoebe started Hogwarts, Neville felt strong enough to get back to work. He was reluctant to return to Hogwarts and risk the conflict of interest with his daughter, and he definitely did not feel prepared to return to being an Auror, so he decided to write to the Department of Mysteries and meet to discuss the steps to becoming an Unspeakable. This allowed him to combine his investigative talents with his passion for Defence Against Dark Arts and Herbology. |
Special Situations
After enduring school years filled with bullying and unforgivable curses, followed by playing a strong part in the Wizarding War, Neville unfortunately suffers with PTSD. This branches into alcoholism and depression. He is getting better at managing his triggers as he progresses through adulthood, but his PTSD undoubtedly still plays a role in his day to day life.
Neville sees a psychiatric therapist at St Mungo's, who has particular experience with veterans. This is enough to maintain his stability. He also enjoys art therapy in the form of crochet.

Her father was having a bad day again. When Phoebe woke up, he was still in bed. This was pretty common for a bad day. He normally seemed to perk up when she was around. She shuffled across the landing in her bright pink bunny slippers. She knocked on her parents' bedroom door and received a muffled response.
"Yes, babygirl? Come in." Neville called out.
Phoebe made her way over to the bed and sat beside him. She laid down and curled up, feeling his arms slowly wrap around her.
"Daddy, I was just thinking... can we plant some sunflowers today?" she whispered, shortly before rolling over and giving him a little smile.
"I think that would be a good idea, sweetie. Shall we go and get ready?" he replied. Neville shuffled around and sat on the edge of the bed.
Phoebe didn't need to be asked twice. She immediately scurried across the landing and into her bedroom. She put her favourite clothes on, and a pair of dragonhide gloves. Sure, sunflowers were pretty harmless but the gnomes might be on the loose again! She bounced down the stairs, closely followed by her dad (who was wearing his favourite sweatshirt). Phoebe turned the handle the front door with her small, delicate fingers and held it to allow her father through first.
Neville walked straight to one of the flowerbeds... where a leprechaun happened to be lurking! There was a loud shriek from the leprechaun as it began to run into the greenhouse. Phoebe let out a giggle, her father a sigh, and they both reluctantly wandered after the mischevious fae.
