A Brief History. | Augustine Victoria Rookwood was born to the Rookwood Family. A family who had a long history of dark magic, crimes, and supporting people like Lord Voldemort. She was much the same as they were, proudly espousing Pureblood Ideology without much critical thinking skill behind it.
She had a nondescript life at Hogwarts. She wasn't authoritative enough to be named Prefect, and she certainly brilliant enough to earn accolades. She was an average student whose only claim to fame was her bullying of muggleborn students, but even then she only ever did that if she was with her group of friends, and she was never the one leading it, only just an active participant you couldn't pick out of a crowd.
She joined Lord Voldemort alongside his uncle Augustus Rookwood and was a low-ranking Death Eater in his army, and she committed atrocities under the leadership of more competent Death Eaters. However, her unremarkable life allowed her to escape from the Aurors and the Order during the Battle of Hogwarts, where she fled the field the moment she felt the tide turning against them.
For years she laid low, switching houses from houses and committing petty crime to survive. When the hunt for Former Death Eaters subsided, she resurfaced and assembled a group of thuggish wizards, former Snatchers, petty criminals, bandits and other unscrupulous sorts who was united only due to her low cunning and relative charisma. She claimed that this group was the Ashwinders come again and that they wished to reclaim their former prominence in the wizarding world.
They engaged in low level organized crimes like thievery, burglary and protection rackets, only managing to avoid the Department of Magical Law Enforcement because they were a much lesser threat compared to the various new names coming around, which allowed them to worm their way to power.
Eventually, the Ashwinders through Augustine's leadership managed to expand into the original Ashwinders' bread and butter, Poaching Magical Creatures. Though they started with hunting wild crups, kneazles, jarveys and the occasional Hippogriff, Augustine's insistence on them "modernizing," (Which really only meant cutting down on petty crimes and standardizing their poaching process) strengthened the group's cashflow and standing enough that they're now currently engaging in high level Dragon and Unicorn Trafficking, as well as establishing "Gladiatorial Arenas," where creatures could fight each other to the death to the amusement of black hearted wizards.
This gave them enough wealth to cement them as a reasonable power in the Wizarding Underworld, and it allowed Augustine to expand her operations across Wizarding Britain, with most of her poaching and racketeering operations now expanding to the outskirts of Hogsmeade, and there are those who even say that she feels confident enough to send groups of poachers to the Forbidden Forest, to expand their operations there. Augustine, meanwhile, handles all of this in her stronghold of Rookwood Castle, a ruined redoubt in the Scottish Highlands, south of Hogsmeade and Hogwarts. It's said that she reclaimed her once ancestral home as a testament to her vanity, and her belief that she will take back the respect her family lost.
