JACQUELINE DEVLIN
12 JUNE 8, 2008 STUDENT 2ND YEAR RAVENCLAW MUGGLEBORN GLASGOW, SCOTLAND | PERSONALITY: Jacqueline, affectionately known as "Jackie" to her friends and family, is self-reliant and values her freedom above all else. As a Muggleborn, she's learned to depend on herself, especially at Hogwarts, rejecting societal norms that try to confine her. Determined to carve out her path, Jackie is innately innovative and expresses it through jewellery-making, modelling her creations as a form of self-expression. However, they are not good and are frequently made from household items like bottle caps or ring pulls. Confident in herself and her authenticity, she is refreshingly straightforward, caring little for the opinions of others. As a result, she may come off as uncaring or rude, her directness occasionally alienating others around her. It is a direct contradiction to who she is when you befriend her: someone who is inherently generous, and willing to sacrifice her needs for the people around her. Perhaps her biggest pitfall; Jackie's fiery emotions can sometimes get the better of her, leading to hasty actions or words she later regrets. Her defiant nature drives her to oppose any form of compromise or restriction. She wrestles with self-doubt and the longing for something bigger than the ordinary, often questioning her choices and struggling with insecurities that linger behind her confident façade. At the very least, she has Hogwarts to satisfy her need for adventure for now. ASPIRATION: Jackie is sceptical about what the future has in store for her. While she shares her mother’s love for the sea and singing—her mother being a cruise ship entertainer—Jackie finds that career path bland and uninspiring. Besides, after experiencing the world of magic, she's not sure she could ever completely return to the Muggle world. For now, her main priority is simply getting through school and hopefully improving her grades. At the very least, she would like to make a friend who can tolerate her "unique" personality without sprinting away five seconds later. | LIKES: - Jewellery making - Patterned socks - Wearing ugly jumpers - Cryptozoology - Astronomy - Nail art - Open spaces, particularly the Forbidden Forest DISLIKES: - Statues of Gnomes - Tight spaces - Wearing plaid - Potions - Hot weather - The sound of violins - Being told that she can't do something |

CHILDHOOD. | Like most things in Jacqueline’s life, her childhood was fairly unremarkable. Born just above the poverty line, her mother was only 18 when she was born, and her father moved away soon after. For much of her early life, it was just Jackie and her mother. The first six years were spent in Glasgow, where she was encircled by enough family that she never really noticed the absence of her father. When her mother took a job working on cruise ships, Jackie spent most of her time aboard, becoming used to constant travel and never staying in one place for too long. This made forming friendships challenging, but it fed her sense of adventure. She grew comfortable with the ever-changing scenery and was generally well-liked by her mother’s coworkers, though a tad on the annoying side. When Maxine met Stephen, life slowed down, and Stephen, who treated both Jackie and her mother well, ultimately became a real father to her. Though her relationship with her mother and Stephen is nothing particularly thrilling—more parental than friendly—her mother tries to blur that line by being more of a friend first. Her younger sister, Cameron, on the other hand, is the light of her life, and Jackie is fiercely defensive of her. If you were to ask Jackie about the most exciting moments of her life, she’d mention two: the first, seeing an iceberg up close on a cruise, “like in Titanic,” as she’d say. The second, and certainly the most life-changing, was discovering she was a witch—through a letter delivered by what she described as “a minging brown owl wae rabies.” It was after the owl incident that her mother had to remind her to “speak properly”, and that people would think she was a “wee hairy from Glasgow”. Despite her pleading, she has not managed to kick the accent or the slang yet. |
SCHOOL YEARS. | It wouldn’t surprise anyone to hear that Jacqueline is, by most measures, an unmemorable student. Hogwarts was — and still is, even after a year — a tremendous culture shock for her. Back home, she was used to sitting in a single classroom from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., or even leaving early at 1 p.m. if she managed to convince the receptionist that she was "pulling a sicky." Now, she’s navigating a sprawling timetable, bouncing between different classes, and dodging a staircase that "tried to kill her" (in her words). That is not to mention the ghosts, magical creatures, blood purists, and an overwhelming sense that she doesn’t belong in Ravenclaw, or anywhere in the school. Jackie frequently feels out of place among the students of her house, convinced she’s not as intelligent as everyone else — a belief only reinforced by her grades, which would give her mother a heart attack if she saw them, or could understand what a "Poor" was in Scottish grades. But while she doesn’t realize it, she represents Ravenclaw's qualities in other ways. Her first year at Hogwarts was a lonely one; she struggled to make friends, avoided joining any social clubs, and spent most of her time wandering the castle, simply trying to stay afloat. When she wasn’t wandering the castle, climbing something she probably shouldn’t, or avoiding most of her professors, Jackie could be found on the grounds making jewellery. However, this didn’t help her make any friends; instead, it earned her the label of "weird." To this day, Jackie still can’t quite grasp what’s so odd about a necklace made entirely of fishing nets and sponges. Perhaps she never will. Despite her poor grades, lack of social connections, and a particularly aggressive rat that bites her during Transfiguration, Jackie has found a passion in Astronomy, where she’s excelled. She’s looking forward to the Third Year, mostly for the chance to finally take Ghoul Studies. She hopes they talk about "Mothman". |

RP SAMPLE (200 words min.)
If you asked Jackie, she’d tell you she was ecstatic to be back at Hogwarts. She’d go on about how she spent her summer sailing from Southampton to Denmark and Norway with her mother, ate at a Michelin-star restaurant, and even met Joey Essex ("of TOWIE fame," as she’d eagerly clarify, thinking people knew who that was). But the truth? Jackie wasn’t exactly eager to be back at Hogwarts. Well, maybe that wasn’t entirely true either.
She was happy to return—the food, the breathtaking scenery, the infinite nooks and crannies to investigate. She even loved the ghosts, who made the lonely corridors feel less isolating. But what she wasn’t overjoyed about was the dreaded return to classes. Wasn’t it enough that she was already a Witch? Now she had to suffer through second-year Transfiguration, a class so boring it could put her to sleep if she wasn’t planted in the front row, that is.
“Flintifors. What does it do? Any takers? Miss… Devlin?”
Like a deer caught in headlights, Jackie froze. “Latin isna—” she began, then quickly remembered her mother’s nagging about speaking correctly. “Latin is not my strong suit, Professor. Neither is Transfiguration. If I had to guess… it creates flint?”
“Wrong.”
At that moment, Jackie could’ve melted into her chair. The snickering behind her—from a Hufflepuff, of all people—caused her cheeks to burn redder than a spot on the Professor's cheek. That was new, by the way. Every Transfiguration class, Jackie made a habit of counting how many spots the professor had—something to keep her entertained when the lesson dragged. And that particular spot? Definitely wasn’t there last week.
She leaned over to the Gryffindor boy sitting next to her, the one with black hair and green eyes, whom she’d mentally anointed "the fourth member of Green Day" because she’d never troubled herself to learn his name and he looked like he could play in the band. “Tough crowd,” she mumbled.
He didn’t find it funny. She could tell by the look on his face. But that was fine; Jackie was used to it. Not many people found her funny—at least she found herself funny, and that was what mattered.
