Yichen Hou
17 18 DECEMBER 2003 STUDENT 6TH YEAR GRYFFINDOR HALF-BLOOD JIMEI, XIAMEN, CHINA | PERSONALITY: Yichen may not be an actual empath, but he has been known to have an innate ability to the emotions of others and sometimes even decipher their needs better than most people. He’s a warm and compassionate young man, knowing that life dealt him a bad deal, he’s learned to live with it and hopes that he could possibly help other people get over their own difficulties through the same perseverance and determination he’s had all his life. Always being put down by other people that don’t understand him, he’s found a new way of looking at the world in darkness. He believes that most people walk through their lives with a blindfold on, not really seeing what’s right in front of them until it’s taken away. When he was younger, he learned that even something as valuable as a person’s sight could be taken from them, and that’s humbled him in ways he never thought possible. This is a whole new definition to finding the light in the darkness. He owns a guide dog that helps him get around from time to time, but out of consideration he will often just use his walking stick when he’s in class. He knows that dogs can be a big distraction to the general population, and he would rather not be the cause of why so many people fail to move in to their next year. Yichen has deep sense of justice, and will not stand while someone else is in trouble. Though he would rather avoid the use of violence, the boy isn’t afraid to crack a few eggs to get his point across. Bullying isn’t acceptable in his presence. He’s learned to trust his instincts, remaining calm while under pressure and being able to weed out the fake people from the genuine. This has helped him form long lasting friendships and bonds with people over the last couple years of his life. It’s safe to say that he’s very protective of the people he cares about, and would resort to violence if it meant that he could help them. Don’t underestimate him to be weak just because he’s blind, he’s learned to adapt and fight back. Not everyone needs their eyes to sense an attack coming towards them. ASPIRATION: Yichen doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life after school, his disability has made most careers close to impossible to achieve. Perhaps he’d go into something with animals? Create his own seeing eye dog center where he helps the dogs learn how to guide their blind companions through their daily life. He’d need some help with that, since running a business is a little difficult without one’s eyesight. For now, that feels like a place where he can start building up from, and it will help him not only comfort others like himself but also stay true to himself. A lot of dogs need new homes to go too, so it would be a win-win situation for everyone. Letting the dogs stay at the center while they were being trained, and then letting them go to new homes where they would do most of the caretaking for their human companions. Perhaps now that he was in his sixth year, Yichen should be looking into who was interested in joining him to create such a beautiful program for others with vision disabilities and the beautiful dogs that would literally become man’s best friend? It was something to work on, carving out the dream to make it possible. | LIKES: - Dogs - Making friends and trying to imagine what they look like since his vision is limited to very blurry blobs - Reading, though that’s probably a bit of a stretch since he needs to use the “Read me” spell to even remotely known what’s written on a page - Spending time with the last few family members he had left in the world - Spending time outdoors because it looks too dark in the castle, even the blurry blobs he sees are too dark to understand what’s right in front of him, when he’s outside, sometimes he can pretend he’s looking a a beautiful tree that he vividly remembers what one looks like DISLIKES: - Bullies and violence. Yichen will not stand idly by if he hears someone in trouble, he will try to take the diplomatic approach before he ventures into a more violent territory - Being alone. He is almost never alone, Yichen has his guide dog to keep him company most of the time, but even animals need their space. He tends to feel very vulnerable when he’s alone. - Dark places. He might not be able to actually see the darkness, but for some reason the blurry images in his vision would look different when he’s in the dark compared to when he’s standing in the light. - Narcissistic people. They rub him the wrong way. Yichen has been so used to being around selfless and loving people all his life that when he started school and learned there were just narcissistic and egotistical people out in the world, he decided to try to avoid them at all costs. - Rainy days. His parents died in a car crash on a rainy day, and though he didn’t see it happen, it still haunts him. Maybe one day he’ll get over his trauma with rain, but for now, he’s still living with it. |

CHILDHOOD. | Hou Yichen was the only child born to Liguang Shui and Hou Jiu Min, born on 18 December 2002, they raised him to be a a sweet child that held the goodness of the world in his heart. Yichen was spoiled by his parents, everything was perfect, until it wasn’t. Shui found out the reason why her husband was stay out all the time and barely coming home, he’d found some pretty Pureblood witch to hang around with now. His parents though never really outspoken purists were happy to see that their son was spending more time with people that were more on par with their family, and urged him to divorce Liguang Shui to remarry Mo Xiao Tan, now Hou Xiao Tan since she took on the last name of Hou Jiu Min. All this happened when Yichen was still four years old, and those memories were embedded deeply in his mind. As time passed, Yichen was bumping into more things just walking through the house, and around the age of six, the problem had gotten so bad that he’d accidentally bumped into his stepsister (uptight, prissy little princess she acted like she was) and it got him in trouble. His stepmother scolded him, threatening to throw him out of the house to live with his scum of a mother. What had he done that had deserved such a terrible threat? His father finally took the initiative to go get him checked out by multiple doctors, but they got to the ophthalmologist that finally diagnosed him with some kind of blindness that was quickly taking over his eyesight. They tried to treat it, but the doctors couldn’t bring back Yichen’s eyesight. By the time he was nine years old, he was almost completely blind, only being able to see small shapes. Yichen’s father got him a seeing eye dog to help him get around, and decided that they should go on a relaxing trip to Hawaii over the summer. In Hawaii, the young boy was walking somewhere he wasn’t supposed to, but he didn’t know that, he couldn’t see. It was a pier of some sort, probably where people jumped into the water, so it was perfectly safe when he fell from the until he realized how strong the current was and he couldn’t stay afloat. Yichen cried out for help, but it didn’t seem like anyone heard him, as he was going under someone grabbed him and lifted him to the surface. In thanks he gave the girl a bracelet of colorful beads, only to be separated later because he wasn’t a pureblood. On his eleventh birthday, Yichen implored his parents to go to Hogwarts instead of continuing at Mahoutokoro, so he transferred to begin his first year at the well-known school: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Perhaps he would be able to find the girl that saved him from drowning two years ago here? (488) |
SCHOOL YEARS. | He’d already been introduced to magic as a day student in Mahoutokoro for the last three years, magic wasn’t all new to him anymore. His stepmother and stepsister were purebloods, and magic was almost always used around the house. Yichen’s primary focus was to get into Hogwarts and try to locate the girl he met in Hawaii all those years ago. She probably wouldn’t remember him, he had been such an insignificant figure in her life. But, she was his savior and now that he was older, he would like to get to know her, find her if he could. Hawaii was closest to Hogwarts, right? Or did the girl go to Ilvermorny because it was in the United States and more often than not most people that were part of the states would go there? Did he make the wrong choice? Yichen didn’t find her in his first year or his second year at the school. The Gryffindor was beginning to lose hope that she was even in the school. Maybe she was in a different house, but that made the search even more complicated for him? He didn’t fail to keep up with his schoolwork, using his guide dog to get around the school made things much easier. He might not get along with everyone because he was so irrelevant as the blind student, but at least he learned to adapt. Using the “Read me” spell for homework, reading the textbooks that were in braille, and even learned how to use the quills that wrote things down as he spoke. It was impressive how much the young boy had learned in his first three years at the school through all the chaos that ensued with the kidnappings and killings. Still, he hadn’t found the girl. Now, he was moving onto his fourth year and though he might not have top marks in all classes, he was proud of himself for being able to keep up with the professors. Especially the ones in DADA that kept switching out for new professor almost every year now. It was getting a little insane. He’d learned the way certain professors taught and it helped him grasp the subject better. With so many different professor taking over the class, he couldn’t really find a rhythm in DADA. He did, however, love Care of Magical Creatures. It might not be a dog, but the creatures were all so interesting to learn about. He could say that was his favorite class and he’d been taking it since he was a third year. Fifth year the same thing, he didn’t still hadn’t found the girl from all those years ago, but he hadn’t lost faith yet. He’d keep searching in his own way. Classes were all the same, and even as he began his journey through sixth year, he had high hopes he’d find his savior before he graduated. (483) |

Special Situations
I discussed this in Yichen’s history, but I can go over it again here. He’s using the resources given to him by the school, such as the “Read me” spell to have the book read to him what’s on the pages, the textbooks in braille for when he’s in the classroom so that he isn’t causing a distraction with the spell, and the Quick Quote Quills. He also has a seeing eye dog that helps him get around the school when he’s not going to classes, much preferring his walking stick so that his fellow classmates don’t get distracted by the dog in the classroom.
RP SAMPLE (200 words min.)
For whatever reason Elizabeth was forced to go to this ridiculous ball, maybe a year ago she would’ve actually enjoyed such a party, but in this situation it wasn’t the most entertaining. The blonde hadn’t even tried to dress up to impress this time, her red dress was plain. If it wasn’t for the boldness of the color, she doubted anyone would notice her walking into the Great Hall. Maybe she was wrong and just believed she could walk through the school without being noticed, but she could make it so she wasn’t recognizable if she wanted to, but what was the purpose of that now? She thought the reason she had been left behind had been to do something for her father, but he didn’t send her a letter or anything. It must’ve been a punishment or something so she wouldn’t be home for the holidays or maybe her mother had interfered again?
Whatever the reason was for her staying at the school, Elizabeth was deeply grateful for the break from everything she had to do at home. While it still felt like both a blessing and curse to be stuck at the school for the holidays, she shouldn’t be stuck on that when there was a party going on. The blonde had stopped by the drink table to grab a glass of punch before walking off to the side of the room. Dancing. That’s what these parties were all about and Lizzie was not someone that would get up and dancing in front of a crowd. What a ridiculous idea? She shouldn’t have even thought about coming to the ball. There was no point.
As the blonde turned to leave, her eyes landed on someone she didn’t recall from any previous years. He was far too old to be a first year, so her guess was that he was a transfer student. Elizabeth glanced at his outfit. He was different from all the stuffy pureblood students at the school, that was a given from the way he dressed to this formal event. Lizzie looked away and moved to walk past him. New kid or not, she wasn’t in the mood to entertain these festivities anymore. She might as well go back to her dorm room and settle in for the night.
