GABRIELLE MARIE DELACOUR
34 3 MARCH 1986 TRANSFIGURATION, HOGWARTS 1/4 VEELA HOGWARTS, SCOTLAND | PERSONALITY: Gabrielle is a vivacious person who seems to be full of energy at all times, regardless of how early or late in the day it might be. She can sometimes have difficulty in controlling her emotions as a result, and her students can frustrate her greatly when they're in the mood to do so. However, she is dedicated, hardworking, and fiercely loyal to all those she thinks she has a responsibility to. ASPIRATION: Gabrielle is very happy with her current lot in life and wouldn't give up her job for anything. She's unwilling to seek further promotions which might take her out of the classroom on a more regular basis. On a personal level, though, she's permanently on the lookout for a lasting relationship and the possibility of starting a family. | LIKES: - Milk chocolate - Cats - Moonlit walks - Black coffee - Jazz music DISLIKES: - Most English food - Heights - Winter - Early mornings - Swimming |

CHILDHOOD. | Second and younger daughter of the Delacour couple, Gabrielle was considerably younger than her older sister Fleur, and as such was more than a little spoiled by her parents whilst she was growing up, all the more so once Fleur went off to Beauxbatons. She didn't become the complete brat that she might easily have been, thanks in large part to the fact that she utterly adored her older sister and missed her desperately whenever she was away, but neither did she hesitate to accept all the various gifts and treats which came her way, not only from her parents but also from various relatives and family friends who fell under the spell of the pretty little girl with the entrancing smile. Thanks to the fairly remote location of the Delacour family home, she had few friends as a child, and spent much of her time with her family, or entertaining herself with books and games. It was at this stage in her life that she acquired the love for reading and study which she has retained into adulthood. She also had a head start on the practice of magic, thanks to her father's willingness to teach her spells during long winter evenings around the fire or warm summer afternoons on the lawns. Not much of an adventurer, Gabi was always happy to socialise but less inclined to go exploring than to curl up with a good story or a history book. |
SCHOOL YEARS. | Like other students, she attended Beauxbatons as a day student from the age of seven, and rapidly discovered the true extent of her sociable nature, which had not hitherto had the chance to flourish in her remote home village. Gabrielle rapidly became popular with her classmates and with her professors; with the former on account of her relentless enthusiasm for life, and with the latter on account of her enthusiasm for learning and her solid knowledge base on arrival at the school. Of course, no one is universally popular and she was no exception. Her Veela ancestry, well known on account of her older sister's long attendance at the school, meant that those who chose to pick on her as a target for their bullying had plenty of material to work with, and whilst she never let them see how much they hurt her, she spent more than one evening crying quietly in her room after returning from a day of classes. Sometimes, though, they did get the better of her, and on those occasions, she didn't get upset; she got angry. With many of her friends, this won her more respect than anything else, since she didn't hold back once tipped over the edge; with others, though, it caused a certain amount of distance, as they feared getting caught in the crossfire, and so her friendships were in a constant state of flux throughout her school years. One of the most notable events of her education was, of course, her experience at the bottom of the Black Lake during the events of the Triwizard Tournament; an experience which has stayed with her ever since and, incidentally, which has contributed to a lifelong hatred of swimming. She enjoyed her time at Hogwarts apart from this, however, especially the chance to spend more time with Fleur than she would otherwise have been able to given the separate floor system utilised at Beauxbatons. It was the first time that she had travelled beyond the borders of France, and she found it a very interesting experience, especially with the chance to meet a lot of people — though she was, of course, furious when Fleur did not win. Returning to school, she had a new perspective on life given her own experiences at the Lake and the appearance of Cedric's body at the maze, which could be best summed up as you only live once. More confident to tell people when they had to leave her alone, more confident to show everything that she could do in classes. Gabrielle was one of the preeminent students in her year, and became only more so as she grew older and the full extent of her Veela heritage became more apparent. Very much like her sister, if not more so, she found that those around her paid her more attention than they had before, and that there was very little she could do about it. Though she kept hold of her friends as closely as she could, it became more difficult for her to allow new people into her circle, never entirely sure that they were interested in her for herself and not merely for her attractions. The effects waned somewhat as the first rush of puberty faded, but things were never quite the same again. Nevertheless, she worked hard, focusing on her lessons and her revision. Her teachers were pleased with her progress, and no one was surprised when she topped the lists in her final examinations before heading out into the adult world. |
ADULTHOOD. | After leaving Beauxbatons, Gabrielle took up an offered position with the French Department for International Magical Co-operation, and spent a year working at the French Embassy in Australia. However, she didn't much enjoy her experience there, and whilst she was very efficient in the largely administrative work that she had to do, she didn't enjoy it very much. She took a transfer to the embassy in London instead, hoping that a greater proximity to her home and her family, not to mention her older sister, would help her feel more comfortable in her work, but it simply wasn't for her, and so when an eminent professor whom she happened to meet at an embassy dinner mentioned a colleague who was looking for an assistant, she sat up for half the night drafting her application. Working for Professor Leclerc was an education in itself, and quite deliberately so. Between writing up his proofs and managing his diary, Gabrielle found the time and the energy and the confidence to begin working on her own thoughts and her own research, occasionally being prodded by her mentor into showing him the fruits of her labours. It was entirely against her will and without her knowledge that an article under her name first appeared in the columns of Transfiguration Today, but the second, third, and fourth were reluctantly published by Gabi herself, and in the end, the publication of her first book, New Theories on Transfiguration and Transmutation, was one of her proudest moments. Her first teaching job was at Beauxbatons, alongside many of her own former professors, which was a distinctly odd sensation. Nevertheless, she enjoyed the challenges that the job presented, as well as the opportunity to come up with her own ways of putting across concepts she had once struggled to master as a student, and her students responded well to her enthusiasm and willingness to try new approaches. Gabrielle taught at Beauxbatons for five years, before happening to hear of a vacancy at Hogwarts, which she promptly applied for. Although she loved both France and her parents dearly, her sister was perhaps the person she loved most in the world, to say nothing of her nieces and nephew, and so the chance to be closer to them all was one she couldn't pass up. Hogwarts was something of a change of direction, not least because students were generally older — although possibly the biggest change from Gabi's point of view was the dreadful weather. Still, she found that teaching was much the same, in general. Some of the curriculum was a little different, but her knowledge of her subject was comprehensive enough to cope, and she enjoyed being able to build fresh relationships and confidences with a new group of students. She worked well and consistently. and though her students got the full brunt of her frustrations when they failed to do likewise, they also benefitted from her delight when they succeeded. Gabrielle was offered the position of Deputy Headmistress on her thirtieth birthday, and accepted with enthusiasm, looking forward to having more influence across the school. Generally known as being firm but fair with colleagues and students alike, albeit with a vicious taste in sarcasm when it suits her, Gabi has made her career one of the cornerstones of her life, and despite a somewhat tempestuous nature, is anything but flighty. She has no expectation of moving on any time soon. |

RP SAMPLE (200 words min.)
Birdsong filtered in through the open window, although Gabi was wrapped up in a handknitted jumper under the substantial black robes in which she had been teaching that morning. She was not accustomed, as she was wont to inform colleagues who commented, to the worst excesses of the Scottish climate, even after all the years she had spent in it, and she had no intention of ever becoming so if she could help it. The inevitable result, as far as she could see, would be a loss of her tolerance for heat, and that was one thing she simply couldn't stand for. How on earth would she ever sunbathe again?
Nevertheless, it was nice to see the sun making at least some attempt at shining, and she felt vaguely that she ought to encourage it wherever she had the opportunity to do so. Hence the open window. Who knew; perhaps the weather would take the hint and try to match itself to her expectations.
At least there was no longer ice in her inkwell, she reflected, as she dipped her quill once more and returned her attention to the stack of seventh year essays which she had been steadily working her way through for most of the past week. Some were excellent, most were good, but there remained the irritating few which weren't anything like what they ought to have been, and with NEWT exams creeping closer every day, Gabi was just a little concerned about them. Revision classes, perhaps, she considered. But then again, it wasn't so much a lack of knowledge that was the trouble — or it ought not to be; for these essays, after all, her students could have researched whatever they needed. It was a simple lack of ability in stringing together an argument.
Which was worrying, to say the least.
