I'd like to present to you, the Shimada clan. A lot of thought has gone into the creation of these characters, so I'd appreciate treating them as if they were your precious own with extra TLC! I'd rather not have these characters as first come/first serve as I would like to hear more about what exciting plans you have for them and how you will incorporate them into the plots! The character descriptions below are simply a rough idea for guidance. Any more information needed, please do not hesitate to message me.
HISTORY: A wizarding clan that has dated back for centuries, the Shimada was initially and notably the earliest Dragon breeders in Japan. Despite the outlawing of Dragon breeding by the International Warlock Convention in 1709, the family branched out, sending delegations around the world with the mission to learn and discover more species for their sanctuaries. With time, across several war periods, their involvement with illegal trades increased, particularly with dragons and their eggs. They slowly gained infamy through these activities, their name holding a notorious stance in the Japanese wizarding society to this day.
BLOOD & ALLIEGENCE: The earliest Shimada family was recorded as pure blood, keeping to the line and holding the values until the First Sino-Japanese war. Since getting involved in the wars, their activities and hunger for extended power led them to delve into Muggle affairs, meaning that their line no longer remained pure. Rites, more verbal than anything, against prejudice and persecution had been established in order to keep the peace between wizards and Muggles. Despite these unwritten laws of tolerance, there still remains an old-fashioned mentality of pure-blood prejudice. Their alliance lies with whatever and whoever benefits them; in recent times, their ties and trades have increased with the Death Eaters, this dark influence bringing several family members in near conflict with the Japanese wizard's code.
VALUES: First and foremost.. honour, family, and loyalty. It is important to the Shimada to stand by their clan, for better or for worst, through thick and thin. After that, the values depend on the branch. It has been established that neither Pureblood or Muggleborn is more powerful than the other, as long as each resides under the symbol of the dragon.
The Shimada is also coveted with a chauvinistic mentality, believing that the males play a higher role in society. Xenophobia is also a distinct trait that many possess, less trusting of those from other nations.
POTENTIAL PLOT: The largest Dragon Sanctuary in East Asia is based on the peak of Toshima Island in the Kanto region. The majority of stakeholders for this Sanctuary are those branches that reside in Kanto, with the rest of the branches from other regions holding minor shares with little return, despite having equal rights to the business. This has been the case for over a century, and now the other regional branches are insisting on change, to branch out to form their own sanctuaries - to the dismay of the Kanto branch.
The Kanto branch is the majority in power and will shut down any further proposals of creating any other sanctuaries, in fear of reducing its own buying power and affecting profits. Anyone who attempts a hostile takeover will be met with contempt, with the threat of being ostracised.
NOTES: The clan is male-dominated, with very few female progenies. As a personality trait, most will have an entitled and chauvinistic edge to them, especially the males. The Shimada is proudly Japanese and mostly keep themselves in a bubble they often do not intend to venture out of, so hearing prejudice against other nations is not uncommon. The family resides in Tokyo and are one of the major stakeholders for the Dragon Sanctuary on Toshima Island. He is revered as the golden child of the clan, having completed his transformation ritual at a young age as well as having graduated from Mahoutokoro with the coveted Golden Robe. Following completion of his academics, he continued to work for the Toshima Dragon Sanctuary, bearing the burden of being passed on the the responsibility of the primary stakeholder from his father. Jiro is currently missing, his whereabouts unknown, his family distraught. |
純 JUN | |
volatile - stubborn - stoic
17. PUREBLOOD. STUDENT. TOKYO. Jun is the second child of Hayao, a troublesome boy living in the shadow of his older brother, Jiro. Despite this, he looks up to his brother as do many others, seeing him as a prime example of a thriving and successful being. He cannot think the same for himself, already feeling as if he has lost a race - hence he is adamant to forge his own path, taking a strong affinity to flying and Quidditch, to his parent's dismay as they only see this as a mere hobby and a waste of time. Jun continues to pursue this, his studies compromised as a result. He does not get along with people in general, is viewed as a loner, also often excluded from social groups due to his temperament and aggression. The notoriety of his family's name also plays a part in this, people usually step on egg shells around him as a consequence. He has no interest in the Dragon Sanctuary business, to his father's disappointment. |
HAYATO'S PROGENY
Kanta寛大 | |
Ambitious - Extroverted - quick-witted
18. HALF-BLOOD. CURSEBREAKER. SAITAMA. The eldest son of a pureblood Shimada and muggleborn witch, Kaori. Like Jiro, Kanta bears the burden of one day being handed down the responsibilities of being a primary stakeholder for the Toshima Dragon Sanctuary as part of their birthright of residing in the Kanto region. He graduated Mahoutokoro with a Golden Robe, commencing his career as a curse breaker, enjoying the spontaneity and adrenaline. He enjoys the company of others and can often overcome the discomfort others may likely have over his family name with charm. He is reasonably competitive and enjoys dabbling in certain games to win, particularly flying. He has enough drive to protect his father's share of the Sanctuary, openly against the hostile takeover attempts. |
海KAI | |
AMBITIOUS - QUIET - manipulative
16. HALF-BLOOD. STUDENT. SAITAMA. Kai is often misjudged, people often lowering their guard around him due to his modest and unthreatening persona. As well as this, he does not say much around others. He often uses these attributes to manipulate situations and people around him for his own benefit. He has acquired the same ambition as his elder brother, Kanta, and feels the pressure of matching his success, attempting to excel in his academics at Mahoutokoro. His interests lay in the runnings of the Sanctuary, however, his brother has been taken as a priority for this. Kaii holds some resentment toward this choice, often trying to show his knowledge and worth to his father. |
HAYAMA'S PROGENY
Yōta洋太 | |
SPITEFUL - APathetic - loyal
21. PUREBLOOD. MINISTRY WORKER. CHIBA. Yota is the only son of Hayama Shimada and his Korean wife, Shi-ah. He attended Mahoutokoro as a student, and just as his other close cousins had acheived, he had also obtained the coveted Golden Robe, although not as easily as the others had. Despite being a bright student, he had behavioural issues which affected his studies and resulted in him falling behind in school. Yota had to repeat a year to catch up to his peers, and what a difficult year it had been. After graduating, he applied for the Japanese Ministry of Magic, securing a job after many failed interviews, likely due to his poor interpersonal skills. Part of his behaviour likely stems from an inferiority complex of being born to a Korean mother, being ashamed as a child but eventually accepting his blood and wearing it as a strength. He is one of the few revered sons of Shimada who succeeded in the transformation ritual. |
KANSAI REGION
SATORU'S PROGENY
(TAKEN/NANA) | |
WARY - RECLUSE - DIVERTED
17. PUREBLOOD. STUDENT. OSAKA. The only child of Satoru, head of the Kansai region. Ichiro is burdened with high expectations, particularly when it comes to understanding the Toshima Dragon Sanctuary business. It just happens that he also has an avid interest in dragons, the affinity for the creatures inspiring him to pursue the transformation ritual, as a few of his other cousins had. It is yet to be seen whether he would succeed this ritual. He is currently being pressured to pursue a career in the Ministry of Magic, just like his father, however, this is still something he is considering. He hopes to perhaps chase the dream of owning his own dragon sanctuary, but this is likely to be impossible and met with heavy disdain by the other branches. |
SADAO'S PROGENY
Hoshi星 | |
MERCILESS - VIOLENT - BRAWNY
28. PUREBLOOD. ILLEGAL TRADER. KYOTO. The eldest son of the corrupt Sadao. Hoshi grew up watching his father beat his mother and sister, developing a similar sense of aversion and superiority not specifically for women, but those who displayed weakness. He followed by the example of his father into Mahoutokoro, a disruptive and inconsiderate student, picking fights and abhorrently beating those weaker than him to a pulp. Eventually, he ended up mixing with the wrong crowd, being introduced to the Dark Arts that eventually led to him being expelled with the white robe, a mark of criminality and an immediate trial before the Japanese Ministry of Magic. However, before Hoshi was even brought forward, he had managed to abscond and seek refuge in the underground world of the capital city. He continues to make a living with illegal trades, utilising his family's knowledge of dragon breeding to buy and sell rare dragon eggs. |
陽菜HINA | |
Resourceful - calculating - vengeful
17. PUREBLOOD. STUDENT. KYOTO. Hina had the misfortune of being one of the few girls born into a heavily mysoginistic clan. It was like the moment she had been delivered, she had instantly gone into survival mode, having to deal with shame and neglect for almost her entire life. Her only solace was her mother, who suffered the same treatment at the hands of her abusive husband. As a result, Hina became withdrawn, only speaking when spoken to, observing the patterns and behaviours of her father and using the knowledge to keep her distance and avoid his violent antics. At times, Hina has experienced some sympathy from Hoshi, however, it was always fleeting. Overtime, her emotions have hardened. Hina's main priority is escaping her family - she will likely decide to flee abroad, Hoshi being sent after her to bring her back. |
SATOSHI'S PROGENY
Jin仁志 | |
Altruistic - cautious - Reliable
27. PUREBLOOD. SANCTUARY WORKER. KŌBE. Jin was born to loving parents, his Chinese mother having fallen in love with Satoshi Shimada in Shanghai as a teenager. Jin is one of the very few who is immune to the family's notoriety, but often getting unintentionally roped into the drama. He is a man true to his word and makes a trusting ally, when needed. Since his school days, he had been fascinated by dragons, having successfully passed the transformation ritual at a young age. He went on to work diligently at the dragon sanctuary, getting involved in research of the creatures, whilst keeping his distance from the politics surrounding the business. He has no intentions to profit from the sanctuary. |
HOKKAIDO REGION
RYUU'S PROGENY
英蔵Eizō | |
OPPORtunist - Tolerant - Pragmatic
28. PUREBLOOD. HEALER. SAPPORO. Eizo grew up in the mountains in the north of Japan, the most distant of the regions. As a result, Ryuu's progeny remained out of touch with the rest of the branches, only ever encountering one another during their annual general stakeholder meeting. Although Ryuu had little interest in anything to gain from the Dragon Sanctuary, Eizo had done his research, knowing that they were owed more than the rest of the clan let on. Their portion of the sanctuary had slowly been eroded to the point of being pushed out, and Eizo displayed adamance in getting back what was theirs. He stands in the meetings in his father's place, planning to pull out and create a branch of their own Sanctuary, an idea that will likely be met with antagonism. |
Unknown - Unknown - Unknown
17. PUREBLOOD. ILLEGITIMATE. REPORTED DEAD SINCE BIRTH. |
恵里奈Erina | |
composed - GRACIOUS - Adventurous
15. PUREBLOOD. STUDENT. SAPPORO. Erina is the youngest daughter of Ryuu, and a big age gap of 13 years exists between herself and her brother, Eizo. She has been sheltered as the youngest of the family, her brother mainly eager to keep her away from the clan's debilitating politics, especially from the heavy misogyny. Erina, despite understanding the goodness behind her brother's intentions, feels suffocated at times and tends to disobey and venture out to learn more about what she is being kept hidden away from. This curiosity may likely get her into trouble, not only with her brother, but perhaps become entangled in ill-intended rivalries and disputes that may be difficult to get out from. |
