11 13th July 2009 STUDENT SLYTHERIN, 1ST YEAR PUREBLOOD KYOTO, JAPAN
| PERSONALITY: Kai is a problematic character shaped by a cruel upbringing. His personality is marked by a deep-seated inferiority complex as well as a belief that showing emotion or compassion is a sign of weakness. He is highly self-reliant to a fault and trusts no one. Kai rarely, if ever, lets his guard down, maintaining an unfriendly exterior that keeps others from getting too close.
He is known for being exceptionally difficult to deal with, both by students and teachers alike. Besides his family, whom he fears, Kai sees most people as beneath him, and his interactions are often laced with outright disdain and sometimes jealousy, particularly towards those who appear to be happy and thriving. However, as a child, he still experiences fleeting moments of hope when he is alone, a subconscious will of wanting to be better.
ASPIRATION: Deep down, Kai is driven by a childish and absurd desire to surpass his father, to be stronger and more feared than Sadao ever was. However, Kai is also haunted by the fear of becoming like his father.
He is drawn to his family's long history of connection with dragons, hoping he will one day prove that he truly possesses the Blood of Dragons (in other words, succeeding in becoming a Dragon Animagus), a ritual only very few Shimada pass.
At eleven years old, overall Kai does not possess any conventional aspirations as to what he wants to do when he grows up. He is a poor student and is more drawn towards activities such as Quidditch. | LIKES: - solitude - strength and control - dragons - duelling - loyalty
DISLIKES: - weakness - authority - small talk - cultural conformity - dependence |

CHILDHOOD. | Kai's early years were spent in the family’s estate in Kyoto, having been born into the home of the corrupt Sadao, one of the patriarchs of the notorious Shimada clan. Although the Shimada's questionable reputation is not a secret to the Japanese wizarding community, the clan values discreetness and adaptation, qualities Sadao does not possess. He is cold and cruel with a tyrannical edge, not only his subjects fearing him but even his own family.
Kai grew up witnessing and experiencing his father's abuse, particularly towards his mother and sister. Kai's elder brother, Hoshi, was the first to succumb unintentionally to their father’s influence. As Kai watched Hoshi grow up, he witnessed his brother transform into a reflection of Sadao - harsh, brutal, and unforgiving. Hoshi took every opportunity to assert his dominance, and Kai learned quickly that in Sadao's household, weakness was a sin. It wasn't long before Kai, impressionable as a child, began to mirror these traits.
By the time Kai was old enough to attend Mahoutokoro at the delicate age of seven, he had already internalised much of the toxic environment that had surrounded him. Unlike Hoshi, who had already begun his descent into the new trend of the Dark Arts by this time, Kai was more cautious - observing and learning from his brother’s mistakes. However, at Mahoutokoro, Kai was still recognised as a troublemaker, following in Hoshi’s footsteps with a similar disregard for authority and a penchant for bullying, even if it was to a lesser extent. It was exceedingly difficult for him to make many friends, only a few who were able to tolerate him, a major barrier being Hoshi's looming specter of a reputation. Although, Kai naturally looked up to his elder brother, there was also undeniably a deep festering resentment.
As Kai entered his fourth year at Mahoutokoro, his behavior became increasingly erratic and problematic. The school’s Headmaster, already on high alert due to Hoshi’s past, watched Kai closely. His frequent skirmishes, growing disobedience, and clear disregard for the rules ultimately led the school to expel him, tainting the name of Shimada even further. Kai's parents had no choice but to send him to the neext school which was sympathetic enough to accept him, hopeful the change in culture would make a difference - Hogwarts. |
SCHOOL YEARS. | Kai’s expulsion was a severe blow to his family, particularly to his father, Sadao, who saw it as yet another failure to maintain control over his sons. Desperate to salvage what was left of Kai’s future, his parents decided to send Kai abroad, to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The decision was not an easy one; Hogwarts was known for its different culture and stringent rules, far removed from the familiar halls of Mahoutokoro. The hope was that this drastic change in environment might temper Kai’s troubled inclinations and help him onto a new and stable path, far away from Hoshi's influence.
Upon his arrival at Hogwarts, Kai was thrust into a world that was completely alien to him. The culture shock was immediate - Hogwarts was a place of old traditions, camaraderie, and a focus on nurturing each student’s potential, far removed from the cold, cutthroat world he had known. The language barrier added to his difficulties; though Kai had studied English, he was far from fluent, and his struggles with the language made it difficult for him to communicate effectively with his peers and professors.
In the Sorting Hat ceremony, Kai was placed in Slytherin, a house known for its ambition and resourcefulness - qualities that aligned well with Kai’s own nature. However, his transition into thhe school was far from smooth. There was no doubt that he felt isolated. His abrasive personality and difficulty with English made it hard for him to make friends, and his disdain for what he perceived as the 'softness' of his new environment further alienated him from his classmates.
Despite these challenges, Kai does not give up on his provoking manner, though his methods are subtler than they had been at Mahoutokoro. He quickly identifies those he sees as potential rivals or threats. He continues to navigate and adapt to the new culture, the different teaching methods, and the unfamiliar social dynamics. He would do well academically in his first year at Hogwarts due to the headstart he had been given at Mahoutokoro, however, it is unlikely that he will be able to keep up as he adapts to his new environment.

As much as it plagued his late adolescent mind, being so far away from home, in that little while everything was peaceful. The snow even made the ugly building ahead of him, the Shrieking Shack, look majestic in some odd way. What made it even more peaceful was that there was no one around him. It felt as if he were the only one walking the land. For once, Kai let his guard down, only realising then how much of a burden he had been carrying. Who knew that he would have had such a moment in a place that he currently despised.
”STOP."
The moment clearly didn't last long, neither had he expected it to, his walls racking all the way back up, his whistling faltering. His senses sharpened to the voice which echoed from the distance, his head turning in the direction. And then his eyes caught the girl, who was scrambled up against a tree, fending herself off from someone. As much as he was enjoying his solitude, that certainly caught his interest.
”Don’t touch me!”
"What the-?" Coming to a halt, he frowned, unsure whether to get involved in the mess or not, feeling like the situation was becoming more sinister. As much as he didn't care about other people's problems, his inner instinct wouldn't allow him to turn away. Kai looked around him, desperately hoping someone else would come in to help her, but the land was devoid of any living, breathing person. "For CENSORED sake.." he cursed under his breath, his feet moving swiftly towards the fray. When it came to fights, Kai would consider himself quite proficient, having been both a bully as well as been a punching bag himself. So in this case, his first instinct was to reach for the nape of the attacker's neck before he could lunge for the girl. Gripping hard, Kai pulled him back with as much force as he could, the adrenaline pumping through his veins.
Having thrown him back, his breathing heavy, he turned towards the girl, giving her a look as if it was entirely her fault he was in this stupid mess. Which it was. "You. You okay?" This was the last time he would intervene in anyone's mess.
