BRYN, TAYLOR
SIXTEEN FEBRUARY 18, 2003 STUDENT HOGWARTS/SLYTHERIN/6th YEAR PUREBLOOD INVERNESS, SCOTLAND | PERSONALITY: Bryn is a very ambitious girl who tends to surprise people as she’s more than meets the eye. Coming from a pureblood family, she’s well versed in the strict etiquette attached to high society, but there’s also a rebellious side to her. Whatever would her parents think if they found out she knew how to throw back shots of firewhiskey like it was her job once her homework was all set and handed in? You’ll catch her in the library studying, but it also wouldn’t be a surprise to see her throwing a party by the lake. When it comes to her studies, her Slytherin ambition truly drives her to learn everything she can about a subject she finds interesting. She especially loves potions and arithmancy. Language is also something she holds near and dear to her heart, wanting to travel everywhere once she graduates. She’s not content to sit still and watch life go by. ASPIRATION: Bryn is set on traveling as much as she can when she graduates. Her parents are very much determined to see her married to another pureblood, they often talk about various matches and have other families over for dinner parties so they can figure out her own future. Bryn, however, is set to find that balance of freedom and duty to her family. She hopes that traveling and carving a name for herself, perhaps in the potions world, can buy her time to build the life she wants and not have to listen to exactly what her parents want for her. She loves them dearly, but can find their plans a little suffocating | LIKES: - POTIONS - OLD BOOKSTORES - DANCING UNDER THE STARS - COFFEE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING - BONDING WITH HER FELLOW STUDENTS DISLIKES: - DIVINATION - COOKING FOR HERSELF - EARLY MORNINGS - SUMMER - PUMPKIN JUICE |
FAMILY MEMBERS. | Kenneth Taylor (Father) – 38 years old, Historian Megan Taylor (Mother) – 36 years old, Department of Magical Law Enforcement Rhys Taylor (Brother) – 20 years old, assistant at the Wizarding Wireless Network . |
CHILDHOOD. | Bryn had a very comfortable upbringing. She grew up in Wales until about the age of five, until her grandmother’s death on her father’s side allowed them to move into her old manor up in Inverness in Scotland. The manor had a ton of land and Bryn remembers running and playing through the fields for hours with her brother, Rhys. Coming from a wealthy pureblood family, bryn didn’t want for much. She was used to social events from a young age. Her parents often had many important people over for dinner. She also remembers her father traveling a lot to give talks, his work as a historian well known. Her mother is the one who introduced her to potions. She often watched her mother make potions in her study at home and loved to watch the process. When she came to school, she found a love for the classes, too. For many years, Bryn didn’t question her parents' values. She was happy with the life she led, but as she entered her teens, she started to rebel and find ways to feel a little more in control of her life. It seemed to her that her parents had her entire future figured out, and she wanted some input in her life choices, too. That’s what brought out her fun-loving, party personality. When she can have fun and adventures with others, she feels an escape from the put-together mask she so often had to don when her family had parties with other pureblood families. She and her brother have a very close bond, which has become strained in recent years. Her parents don’t think Rhys’ line of work is of a high enough level for their family name. They think he should amount to more than working at the radio station, and often offer to set up interviews for him for other career paths, but he hasn’t taken them up on it. There is often tension around the holidays because of it. Min. 200 words. |
SCHOOL YEARS. | Bryn literally couldn’t stop shaking with excitement from the moment she left home to head to Hogwarts. She’d heard everything there was to know from her parents and her brother, and she couldn’t wait to head there, too, and start making a name for herself. Even though it was probably a certainty for her to end up in Slytherin, she couldn’t help but feel a little anxious when she walked up to the stool in the Great Hall. What if she didn’t make it into Slytherin? Would her parents be mad at her? The Sorting Hat did mention Ravenclaw in her head, just for a moment, but ultimately called out Slytherin, to her great relief. Sometimes she does wonder how her life would be different, if it had called out Ravenclaw instead. However, she isn’t disappointed in Slytherin house. She fell in love with the common room as soon as she first crossed the threshold. It’s become a source of comfort for her, where she can sit in front of a fire and talk to many of her classmates she’s become friendly with over the years. There’s not a joke or a conversation that she isn’t game for when she’s down there. She finds it inspiring to be amongst a group of people as ambitious as she is, as they talk about their dreams and what they’re working on. Whenever she feels a hint of doubt, all she needs to do is chat with her classmates and she’s immediately inspired again. Aside from potions class, she also enjoys transfiguration and defense against the dark arts. And she may have a secret soft spot for Care of Magical Creatures. Once the weather cools, she loves getting up early to walk alongside the lake as the sun rises. She loves watching the quidditch matches, even trying out a couple times herself, but never making the cut. However, she’s still content to sit on the sidelines and cheer on the team. Though it certainly hasn’t helped her thing for Quidditch players. She follows the national teams closely and developed many crushes in her early teen years. The summer before her sixth year began, she had her eye on a new recruit for the Spanish national team, a young 17 year old that many have high hopes to be a star player. Her parents, spying a possible chance to make a high level match for her, invited him to a dinner party that kicked off the summer holidays. Bryn, using all her pureblood charm and etiquette, found conversation easy and the two quickly developed a relationship. What Bryn didn’t realize was that it was a summer fling to him, and something more serious to her. The summer ended in heartbreak, something Bryn still reels about from time to time. And another thing to drive her need to travel and want to just run away. The summer before her fourth year, she heard a lot from her mother about the implementation of the new Equality Program that was coming. Her parents were not silent about their opposition to it in the household, though her mother, reluctantly, stayed quiet at work to give the appearance of being impartial. Bryn heard bits and pieces of what happened at the ministry in August from her mother, but many important conversations happened behind closed doors with lots of whispering going on. Bryn has a feeling her mother knows more than she lets on about what exactly happened. She heard about the Azkaban break out the way most people did – the newspaper. She wrote to her mother about it, asking for more details and what they were doing about it, but she never received a response. With her mother refusing to acknowledge anything but simple day-to-day things in her letters, Bryn took it upon herself to keep up with the news and see if she could find any clues to what was going on in the newspaper. The names of missing people – the list of which grew longer with each edition – stuck with her. Everything in her genes told her she really shouldn’t care. None of this would affect her. It was only those who threw out tradition who were at risk. Yet… she couldn’t shake the image in her head of what might have happened, how their families may have felt… She refused to say anything about it to anyone. Yet since then, she’d walked by herself with more caution, even the halls of Hogwarts feeling a little less safe than she’d felt they were before. Thankfully during her fifth year and sixth year things seemed to have finally started to settle down. Though she still keeps a sharp eye on the newspaper for anything going on. Segregated classes were something that didn’t actually bother her. She did find a homey feeling being surrounded by other purebloods who didn’t ask silly questions and had their own family history and traditions to impart in conversations in class discussions. The sense of normalcy sometimes unnerves her, because she knows something else is right around the corner. Although many have pretended things are 100% back to the way they used to be, Bryn knows they aren’t, and she isn’t sure what more to expect, or what to assume her place in it will be. Despite the hour, Bryn still couldn’t fall asleep. She tried to sleep on her right side, her left side, her back, her stomach, but no matter which position, she couldn’t get comfortable, and her mind wouldn’t quiet. She sighed, flipping over again to face the window. Moonlight streamed in and stars twinkled in the distant sky. The dorm was filled with the soft sounds of the other sleeping girls. What she’d give to be one of them. Her final exam was tomorrow, and she knew she needed to do well. Step one was getting a good night’s sleep. Step two was a good breakfast. At this rate, she’d feel terrible in the morning and her mind would be foggy.
She pushed herself up onto an elbow and reached for the drawer on her bedside table. She pulled out the parchment that had arrived this morning from her brother. A part of her felt resentful that he had to send such a cryptic message today of all days… to mess her head up before exams. But the other part knew he probably wouldn’t have sent anything at all if it weren’t important.
She unfolded the parchment to read the letter again. To anyone else, it sounded pleasant enough. It talked of his day and his job and how he looked forward to seeing her at Christmas. But it was that last line… when was Rhys ever excited for Christmas? Especially the last two years… Something about it didn’t sit right with her. Something about it felt wrong…
She brushed her fingers over the familiar cursive. Maybe after her exam, she’d figure out a way to speak with him. Just to find out what was really going on.
