BASIC INFORMATION
Maya laureano 32 February 26th mediwitch Ravenclaw graduate half-blood London | PERSONALITY: At first, Maya seems shy and reserved, and most definitely a bookworm. She's kind and compassionate, doing everything she can to make her own skills as good as possible so she can live up to the example her father gave her. While she seems shy at first, she really is like that until she gets to know someone. As soon as she is more comfortable around someone, Maya comes to live, so to speak. She is bright and bubbly and more than a little sarcastic. She will openly tease her nieces and nephews while doting on them thoroughly. Though she doesn't have children yet, Maya enjoys spending time with her family. With most of her emotions on her sleeve, she's easy to laugh, easy to cry and everything in between. LIKES: Sunflowers, helping others, her family, pistachios, being able to stay up reading (romance novels are, by far, her favorite, but she is fond of a few dramas and mystery novels), her job working as a mediwitch, trips to Barcelona to visit her Abuela and cousins. DISLIKES: Violence, over exaggerations, liars, coconut (how can ANYONE like that texture?!), being disturbed while she's reading or studying, the ending of movies or books blurted out (that's just plain rude). ASPIRATIONS: Ever since she was little, she'd looked up to her father. Her goal all throughout childhood, during her time at Hogwarts and afterwards was to become as great a healer as her father. She wanted to help people. Where the world was so determined to destroy life, she wanted nothing more than to save as many lives as possible. |

HISTORY
CHILDHOOD:
Maya grew up between London, England where her mother was from and Barcelona, Spain where her father's family was from. She grew up rather sheltered but lived a happy life with her brothers and sisters. Her parents met when her mother had gone on holiday to Spain. Both were doctors, though her mother was a muggle and her father was a wizard. Her mother was a pediatrician, usually working for a local doctor's office with children. Her father worked at a wizarding hospital near Barcelona for a long while until they'd decided to relocate back to London, where he ended up getting a job at St. Mungo's Hospital. It wasn't long after they were married that Maya's oldest brother Francesco was born, followed by herself, then her two sisters Lucia and María and then, finally, her baby brother Daniel. Needless to say, the Laureano household was quite busy with 5 kids but, despite the chaos, Maya grew up happy. They'd managed to stay out of the last wizarding war by relocating to Barcelona in the middle of it. Her parents had decided to pull her and her siblings from Hogwarts, despite their childrens' protests to the contrary.
SCHOOL YEARS: The school years have been grouped together depending on what school you attend. Please briefly touch on each year as you write your school year history. Pick the Remove what's irrelevant (Mahoutokoro and Beauxbatons have ten years, Durmstrang has eight.)
FOR HOGWARTS STUDENTS:
YEAR ONE/TWO:
Maya's first couple of years at Hogwarts were full of nervousness, a lot of shyness all mixed with the complete awe at what she could learn in her classes and from that wonderful library - both for the school and in the Ravenclaw common room. It wasn't long before she'd befriended people and, while her circle wasn't huge, the few friends she made were fast friends. While they were in school, they'd spent as much time together as possible studying, sneaking down to the kitchens for sweets (with the help of a couple of Hufflepuff friends, of course), and playing games in the common rooms. Overall, Maya had surrounded herself with the friendly kind of people and made a point of avoiding the more sour characters for fear of getting caught up in it all. A pacifist at heart, Maya knew what she'd wanted to do with her career even during her first and second years - though she didn't quite know where in medicine she wanted to go to.
YEAR THREE/FOUR/FIVE:
Her third and fourth years at Hogwarts were similar to the first two, with the exception of a much more rigorous class load. While she'd made sure to attend Quidditch games and play with her friends, most of her time was spent studying for her classes and O.W.L.s. This, however, was disrupted by the start of the wizarding war with Voldemort and Harry Potter. Maya wasn't one to get involved in any drama and wondered how they all could simply run headlong into obvious danger like they did. She wasn't a coward per-se, but she knew she didn't want to have to hurt anyone. The choice to do anything about the war was taken from her entirely during her third and fourth years when the situation in England was growing much worse.
Her parents made the decision to pull herself as well as all of her siblings from Hogwarts and relocate the whole family to Barcelona with her father's family. During this time, her aunts had taken the time to teach them what they needed to know in the years they were missing. Because of this, their schedules became much more lax than they would be at Hogwarts and Maya was able to study a bit more under her father to learn more about what he did since he'd gone back to his old position at the Barcelona wizarding hospital. From this, Maya had renewed her love for healing and often went to join her father at the hospital. Her fourth year finally saw the end of the wizarding war, much to the relief of the world as a whole. They were able to breathe easily. Harry Potter had defeated Voldemort and his Death Eaters and it was now safe to return to London and, in turn, to Hogwarts.
Happy to be back, Maya spent her fifth year catching up with her friends, mourning the loss of many of her classmates and studying for her O.W.L.s. She'd made sure to concentrate on the subjects her father had stated would be important in the medical field and managed to pass her tests with flying colors. Well, all except Divination and Defense Against the Dark Arts. While she'd seen some use for herself knowing about the Dark Arts spells, she just couldn't quite get herself to master the spells, jinxes and curses it entailed. Something about the whole thing just seemed wrong in her eyes. With her older brother graduating school and her passing her tests, she'd spent the first part of her summer between fifth and sixth years celebrating with her family, taking a holiday back down to visit her Abuela (primarily) and her other family. It was as if the dust had settled and the rubble was clearing for a bright future.
YEAR SIX/SEVEN:
Maya's sixth and seventh years went by in a blur of homework, essays, preparing for what came after Hogwarts and studying for the tests she would need to pass to get into the medical program after she graduated. During breaks, Maya would spend her time shadowing her father at St. Mungo's, learning everything she could get her hands on and practicing every spell her father had shown her. In her eyes, he was absolutely wonderful at what he did. His coworkers and patients loved him and he truly seemed like he was enjoying his work. When her seventh year finally came by and she tested, Maya cut back completely on most of her social life to study for her entry exams. Taking the trips to the hospital helped put things together for her greatly and she managed to pass her tests with one of the highest scores in the class. Maya couldn't have been happier.
ADULTHOOD:
Though she'd easily gotten into the medical program, Maya spent the first few years out of Hogwarts simply studying and going to the hospital to shadow and learn. There was very little time between those two and she'd often find herself completely frazzled. It was at those times that her father pulled her aside, took her for ice cream in Diagon Alley and forced her to remember something: "You can't take care of others if you refuse to take care of yourself, Mija." It was these words and the wonderful taste of strawberry and chocolate that got her to bring her focus back to what mattered most to her. Several years later, she'd managed to make her way through her medical schooling and got a position in the emergency ward of St. Mungo's Hospital. She'd found the fast paced life there kept her engaged and challenged, seeking every day to embrace the changes and help as many people as she possibly could. By the time she'd turned 30, Maya had already been promoted from a simple healer to a full MediWitch.
It wasn't easy work, exhausting on the best of days, but the more lives she saved, the better she felt about life. The only down side, in her mind, was when she lost a patient and would have to deliver the news to the family. Every single time, it broke her heart to see them wither and break down. Parents, grandparents, children, friends... None of these were easy to relay. Sometime it had gotten to her in ways she hadn't expected and, even in her thirties, her father would take her out again. "Don't worry about what you can't do, Mija. Concentrate on what you CAN do instead." Those words rang through her mind every time after that, giving her that little bit of extra strength she needed to push forward. There was nobody in the world, at least to Maya, like her Papa.

RP SAMPLE
Every single on staff medic, healer, nurse and doctor were running around the hospital frantically trying to compensate for the mass influx of patients that had suddenly boomed through the emergency ward. Some were fixable. A lot weren't. Apparently a Death Eater faction was causing chaos in a suburb not too far away. Maya herself had been at home but had gotten the urgent call for her to come in immediately. All staff who were off received the call and now the halls that were once calm, if morose, were a bustle of frantic mayhem with a mix of doctors, patients and family members trying desperately to be seen as quickly as possible. With this many patients, unfortunately the staff had to prioritize who they saw first by how severe the injuries were and if the patient would need immediate emergency help or not. Maya hadn't stopped, hadn't even taken a pause or a breath of fresh air since she got there an hour ago. Already she'd seen twice the amount of patients she would see in an entire twelve hour shift in just an hour and a half. No doubt she would need a drink after this.
Maya was going from patient to patient, assessing, diagnosing and providing treatment as best she could. If she could. She'd neared the front counter where a bustle of people were centralized waiting to be sorted when she heard the frantic screams for help. Of course most of the people in the front were patients and there were a few lower nurses who had very little medical expertise except for which ward each patient should be sorted to. None could help. Screams mixed with loud, panicked sobs and Maya turned to the patient she'd stopped by only moments before. "I'll be right back," she whispered and ran down the remaining distance of the hall, pushing through people in the process. What she saw when she burst into the lobby made her heart drop into her stomach. Two brunettes were on her floor, one motionless and the other a complete mess of tears. In the sobbed screams, Maya heard the name Katarina Summers and knew. This was definitely a Death Eater attack.
Her father had told her of the times he'd had these same situations happen during the last wizarding war and the talk of the people was none other than Summers and the terror she invoked in every person who met her. Hadn't she been locked away? Now her father was back tending to patients the same as herself while Maya leaped into action, almost sliding from a jog next to the woman on the floor. Already, within mere seconds, Maya had little hope for the woman. Maya's first response was to check for a pulse and signs of life. Nothing. "You said she was poisoned? How long ago? Do you know what the poison was?" Her questions came in quick succession as she gently guided the distraught woman away from the patient to see if there was anything she could do to get her back. While waiting for a response, Maya drew her wand and started performing diagnostic spells to see what they could tell her. Immediately the heart came into play. What the hell kind of poison essentially caused a ventricle to erupt?
Maya worked for several minutes trying to get signs of life back but it was useless. With the heart the way it was, even if they got it beating again, it wouldn't support blood flow through the body. At last she leaned back and bowed her head, then nodded over to the attendant at the desk. "I'm sorry," Maya stated softly, returning her gaze to Cordelia. "She's gone. There's nothing that can be done. Is there anyone that we can call for you?" Just the look on the woman's face said everything. This was such a close person to the deceased and such a hard blow. Most of Maya's career had been centered on saving lives, being able to bring people back even from the brink of death. The single most difficult thing that she ever had to do was console a family member after a death. Maya wished so badly that there was a spell to revive the dead, to bring them back to their loved ones but it just wasn't possible. But she could at least be there for the woman and help her through this stage of the grieving process.
